I’ll be coming to Charleston in September for some pier fishing while down there. Got a Penn Spinfisher v 4500, haven’t gotten the rod yet, but would braid be better, or mono, what lb test too?
Most would say mono for a pier. Braid will cut others lines if you are fighting a fish. What are you fishing for?
Braid for capacity no stretch. Mono less capacity but stretches. I would say braid because you can’t pull anchor to land a fish.

Like what lb test? 30lb for braid, or is that too much?
The thing with braid is that the diameter is fairly small even at high strength. Like a sample comparision for power pro is braid 100lb = 20 lb mono. It is gonna all depend on what your targeting and how much you wanna play with the fish. If your looking to horse in anything up to decent size sting ray you can prob move up to 60-80lb braid and still spool 100s of yds on any decent reel. My preference is usually 15-20lb mono/braid so actually have to fight and play with most fish caught off the pier. If you decide go with 15-20lb area it is just a decision/equipment choice as in how much line you want/need. All I will say in regards to that is I have had a 400 yd spool of braid ran off numerous times using shrimp at Folly Pier O,o
Wow, thanks for the info. I’m thinking of spooling up some 20-30lb power pro on my new Spinfisher V 4500. As far as what I will be targeting, no idea whatsoever yet, whatever will be running at the time I’m down there in the 2nd and 3rd week of this September.
