So the University FORCED the white kids to take harder classes???
“The data suggests black student-athletes are disproportionately enrolled in paper courses when compared to white student-athletes,” the group wrote in its complaint to the United States Department of Education.
When I was in school, I decide on what classes I would take. NOT the University.
7, What do you mean do away with it all?
All college sports. Make them intramural. Open the classrooms. The one’s who got in because they could play but not pay? Too bad. Feel like you’re being taken advantage of now? The one’s who could play but were dumb as a rock? Saturdays are for jobs, for the rest of your life. The financially comfortable white kids, who could have gotten in anyway, just not on scholly? You’re in bud. Ask mom and dad how tuition, rent, food, and books feel . The rest of you who were playing your sport, hitting the books, and not *****ing? Guess what? You’re gonna make it in life anyway, because you’ve figured out no one owes you anything.
Ouch. But I would have left out the financially comfortable white kids. It is not just the white kids. This truly has no color. Dumb as box of rocks, shows no color.
But I do understand what you are saying.
I’m not a 7cs guy by any means…
But he, and the author of the article, has a valid point…
If we are steering, or directing, black athletes to certain classes based upon their athletic ability instead of their educational potential, it is wrong.
I have twin daughters, current college juniors, who were advised from the get go on where to direct their pursuits in their college efforts…based upon their abilities…and I am appreciative of them…
If we only mentor young black athletes to pursue a purely athletic future, we are not only hurting them personally, we are hurting the future of our country.
They are our future mothers and fathers…
We owe them much, much more.
We owe ourselves much, much more.
Well said IM4.

Here here-
They should be careful lobbying to for presumably tougher “non-paper” classes! They might get what they want…then figure out that they have to work harder to score well…then not score high enough…and then no basketball at all because they don’t have the grades.
I’m not defending the university’s tactics but is this really a surprise to anyone in the current state of college sports? Most of these guys are there for their athletic skills, not academics…and they’re hand held the whole way just to make sure they stay on the court or the field. Without the athletic ability, many (not all!) of these guys wouldn’t even be accepted to UNC. That’s just the way it is IMO.
Not saying it’s right…I think you should have the ability to choose your own classes. They should be careful though…UNC is one of the top 50 academic schools in the world…they don’t want to end up in classes with those non-athletes who are there because they earned it academically.
I imagine that Dook doesn’t have this issue! But, still…yack! Go Heels.
