We are going to dinner at Morgan creek grill by boat tomorrow late afternoon. I am pretty familiar with the harbor as I have had the boat down a lot. Although, I haven’t really ventured up the intercoastal behind Mt P. Anything I need to be aware of from the harbor to the intercoastal or getting into Morgan creek. Low tide is around 4 tomorrow I believe so it will be the lower side of the tide when we are heading over. Thanks
The docks for Morgan creek grill are right there on the waterway at the IOP Marina. Should be no problem there. I’ve run that stretch a good bit on my trips down and nothing to really look out for if you stay in the channel

Should be about 4345345 boats on the water, the late afternoon negative low tide should be fun to take part in. Follow the crowd and you will be fine.

We were trolling in the Wando and almost got run over by a power boater!
It was a near thing-Fritz is right-the morons and “entitled” idiots who own the water are all out there this weekend.

We sent out Sunday AM and hung out with some friends in a quieter spot.
On the way back in a guy on a rental PWC hit me. He was in the process of returning it to the place on the back of IOP marina, so they were all turning left to cross the waterway, for some reason he turned right without looking straight into me. No damage but I did give him a bit of a mouthful.
Yesterday we just went down to the dock before dinner with drinks and watched the circus. What was a little strange was there were some folks poking around the bank with buckets, i assumed they were looking for oysters. DNR pulled up, and after a while ended up writing them tickets for something. seemed a little excessive.

Shellfish season is closed and depending on where you were the beds may also be in an area closed year around for health reasons. If those folks were dressed in street clothes they also probably had no fishing license and may have been intending to enter the harvested shellfish into commerce at the local all you can eat buffet. Buyer beware.
Well I stand corrected on my excessive comment. I didn’t realize that there was an official shellfish season and that picking them up was illegal.
live and learn.
BTW - All my interactions w/DNR have been positive, the guys i m talking about were all friendly, they did seem to take their time with the shellfish people.

I’d turned into the shipping channel from Shem Creek mid-day Sunday to head up the Wando. Middle of the harbor was a sloppy mess with boats going every direction. Around the Yorktown and in the skinny water, there was a sailing class happening. The green and white harbor cruise boat was making his way from the Yorktown birth and heading to the channel. There was a sailing class monitor boat in the channel slowly motoring in the general direction of Castle Pinckney. There were other boats coming from under the Ravenel.
My best course was a couple hundred yards in front of the harbor cruise boat and between the sailing class monitor boat, giving him probably 100 yards of distance. The sailboats were no where close to any of us.
And then for no really good reason, the sailing monitor boat turned to port and motored directly in front of me and stopped. I had to slam on the brakes to avoid cutting it close to the harbor cruise or the monitor boat.
Crazy day.

What amazed me more than anything were the boats in the intercoastal from the harbor to Morgan creek. That section is barely 100 yards wide in some places. People passing others going 40 mph 5 wide. Sea Tow was trying pull a boat out of there and people were waking the **** out of him. Not to mention waking every boat tied up on the intercoastal.

There have been numerous cases of people meeting that general description picking shellfish in closed areas during both open season and the summer closed season many occur at night when shellfishing is also prohibited. Not interested in consuming shellfish harvested from the Ashley river or the Charleston Harbor both of which have been closed year around because of fecal coliform counts for decades. While some may consider it profiling public safety/health take precedent. There is no limit for commercial harvesters however according to the DNR rule book those with a valid recreational saltwater fishing license may pick 2 US bushels of oysters and 1/2 bushel of clams per person, no more than 2 times in a seven day period. The possession limit for a party is 3 daily bushels regardless of how many licensed individuals are picking.
