Mt. P pier 7/29

Hi all,

I’ve been following this site for a long time finally felt it was time to share.

Hit the Mt. P pier Sunday AM to try for a sheep. First time at the pier and impressed how nice it is. Worked about half way out and peered over to check if I was on a piling and saw a nice fat sheep picking at the barnacles on the cement so I knew I had my spot.

Dropped down using fiddlers. Used 20lb fluorocarbon leader at about 1 ft length with a 1 oz egg sinker. (all learned on this site!) Early on found that puffer fish were stealing my bait as I pulled up about 4 (is that normal?) Flipped sides of the pier and two drops in I pulled up the sheep below, size 12 flop for reference. I also purchased a Penn medium/heavy rod on Sat (per recommendation on this site) which really helped to control the fish and keep away from the pilings.

Tide began to run more aggressively and holding bottom was tough. Didn’t want to use more weight as I was worried I would lose feel. Seems like slack tide is the best time for that. Could be wrong.

I also noticed a lot of folks fishing out there just casting double drop rigs with cut bait/squid which seems like asking for trouble considering all the crabs in that area. Maybe they know something I don’t?

I feel like I have gained so much from reading forums on this site and was finally excited to be able to share my own story! Looking forward to my next outing.
