Went out to the pier with my 7 year old son. Got there about 3 hours before high tide and started slinging crabs under the pier. His attention span is quite short so after 30 minutes he was playing with the toy helicopter I bought him at the pier store, I think he even shoved a crab in it and gave it a helicopter ride.
All of a sudden we see a sheepshead tailing against the bridge piling opposite to the end of the pier munching assorted crustaceans. My son says “ we’ll aren’t you going to catch it dad?” Now I had been told by some guys that the ones out by the bridge piling never eat…So in order to play along with my son I whipped my Carolina rig at the fish. It grabbed the crab so fast And shot like a rocket towards the pier but I stopped him and got him in. We caught some under sheeps and of course a number of toads and puffers.
It was a great day out that both of us enjoyed.
Some guy actually challenged me that the 18 plus inch 4 and a quarter pound fish was under legal length lol I told him to go get a ranger if he’s so concerned.
Good times there, nice report. You should’ve punched that guy out, can’t believe someone would do that when you had your young son with you.
Apparently that guy is one of those people who have been lying to his wife for years because his measuring device starts at 6 inches rather than the 0" mark. Good deal for showing your child that despite other peoples rumors / remarks, that you need to gather your own info for yourself and see the end result…in your scenario equaled fish on, big smiles with your youngen, and most importantly another cherished memory for the dad home team. He still thinks fishing is fishing while you are enjoying the quality time together. Fish looks legal enough to me in the frying pan!!!

Yeah the guy was an elderly southern man. I got the impression he may be a bit senile. The old bugger was a bit persistent until I raised my voice. My boy was chuckling at the whole thing. Thank you guys for the kind words. My boy wants to catch a shark so I figured we’d hit the beach over the next few months.
