Mt pleasant Pier tourney (report)

Picked up 2 dozen mud minnows from Haddrells and was headed off to the tourney in search of flounder (every body was after flounder because if you caught the state record you won a carolina skiff). Started off trying to catch pinfish but epic failed and only caught an 8 inch fish similar to a whiting but a larger back spine. I caught 1 small 13 inch flounder but that was it. When I left 50 minutes before prizes a 22.5 inch red was winning. A group next to me was catching a butt load of flounder most in the 18inch+ range (they were using floats and carolina rigs with mud minnows and 2/0 circle hooks). All in all I loved the tourney. $12 gets you a burger, hot dog, fishing, and a T shirt. The only complaint I have is that the kids division is a maximum of 12 years old and not 17. I being 13 had to go up against experienced 20, 30, and 40 year old’s. Not to mention the kids prizes are the same as the adults so the fathers were catching fish and giving them to there kids so in the end the fathers would get all the equipment. Next time I want to take the tourney more seriously because the prizes were hundreds of $$$ in fishing equipment. There were 4 or 5 divisions but if you won you received a beach cart, rods, reels, rod and reel combos, crab nets, pier nets, cast nets, hats, tools, tackle boxes, line and much more (did I mention you got that for each division)!!! What are some other good tourneys coming up?

I was going to fish it but I worked yesterday, sorry that the fathers were cheating in the kids division, but good to see you still had fun. I saw that skiff and they told me that you had to catch a 17lb flounder to find, and I laughed …

Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

To Stuckonland:
“Cheating by the fathers…” in a tournament like this is horrible. Part of what these tournaments are all about is teaching young folks about ‘sportsmanship’ and ‘fair play’. These ideas seem to have been lost by some and I share your disappointment with them. My father took me fishing in tournaments when I was a kid and would have never allowed me or my brother to enter a fish he caught regardless of the prize. I always admired my father for that. The kids of the cheating fathers know they cheated. I am sure that many of the fathers were honest and would not allow that. To those fathers that cheated: I hope you are happy with the lesson you taught your children. It will come back to haunt you. Payback is hell. Shame on you folks that cheated but congrats to all of you honest winners. Don’t let it keep you from trying again.

My son won the kids division and was hurt by you cheating him of his deserved win by hard work. Most of kids just sit and catch on luck were as my 9 yo looks and searches for the fish. Said you actually witness the cheating or you just a bad sport. I know the only other child’s that was on the board and her and her dad are real stand up people as well. My son landed his fish right at the weigh station therefore was seen by Greg, Chris, etc. Don’t post opinions, stick to the facts.

So a 13yr old comes here, and just calls the folks who won the tourny cheaters and everyone just jumps on that band wagon? WOW, ok… I got a 13 yr old, and his perception of reality is often a little screwy…just an age/experience thing, but I won’t touch that.

What I WILL touch is the fact that I know the families of the winners from this tourny and I can tell you they fish hard core, as a family. They’re good people, who don’t cheat to win, and unless you have some shred of evidence that cheating took place, you should really be careful about throwing accusations around.

Truth is, some those kids you say were ‘cheating’ could probably fish the pants right off you. They’re on the pier fishing every weekend in and out. Instead of complaining, why not try talking with them and learn how to do what they’re doing, then maybe you can compete with them and if you bring an adult out, then you can be accused of cheating if you win…

To Fatheroffive and Bad Bronco:
Thanks for the reports. It is good to know that there were many good folks in that tournament and that the bulk of the winners were honest winners. These tournaments are great for kids and are great opportunities for family fun. To all responsible for putting this tournament on, sincere thanks for the good work.

I’m not trying to start a stupid, over the internet fight because a lot of times that’s what happens on this forum. I never said the winner cheated so I’m sorry if you and your son took it the wrong way. If you say he deserved the prize then he did. As for the father with the daughter my dad and I were fishing right next to him. My father was the one who pointed out to me he set the hook reeled it up to the pier and gave it to the daughter to pull it over the railing. I’m telling you what my dad and I saw and nothing else. Sorry if this started a controversy because I wasn’t trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill but you guy’s are sure making it seem that way.

Why did you guys get so personal? Me and are 13 and just because of that doesn't mean we don't perceive the same reality as you or some crap that your saying. If stuckonland and his dad saw it it probably happened. So if you weren't there you don't know. Whether they cheated or not ill believe it from the person that was actually there. And stuckonland did have his dad with him if that actually matters. So just chill out because you think your friends are all righteous and would never do that and stuff, I wasn't there so I don't know for sure but all I'm saying us you weren't there and stuck was do who do you think is the most credible? And stuckonland I'm sorry that happened it sucks. I'm gonna take you fishin in the boat this summer. I'll pm you sometime when we can meet, it'll give me an excuse to use bushy park and you an excuse to get down here.

I’m a high class redneck.

Fishing is a delusion entirely surrounded by liars in pfgs and buffs.

What day are u talking about

For your info the dad that u say reeled it in for is daughter all he did was take the rod out of the rod holder and she reeled it up.
And im not her dad i am her uncle. if u fish the pier much u would know that we help everbody that need help.If you need fishing lesson come over and we will help. Dont be mad learn how to fish. There is a tournmet at folly pier for 16 and under and it free. So if u want to catch something come out i will be the one with pvc rod holders.

hey scooter…

Wait before this goes any further where were you fishing?. The man who I was fishing next to had no PVC rod holders. He had his rods were propped up against a pier box. Also how old is your daughter(neice)?

So it went from “fathers and kids” to one father/daughter? Thanks for making my point. Did the person (singular) that reeled in their daughters fish win anything?

You started this off saying fathers were cheating and There’s a difference?

Just spend your energy learning to out fish all of them…problem solved…

i was the one with the most pvc rod holders catching the flounders. And my niece is 7 she cought her fish all on her own she reeled them up before we could get the net down she was knock off later in the day.

hey sharkey

You are not the father i was talking about. The father i was talking about only caught 2 fish, none of which were flounder. One was a fish which I didn’t know either a whiting or something else and the other a 6 inch trout which he gave to his daughter who appeared to be 5ish.

The specific father might not of weighed in so sorry, this was my conclusion. Badbronco the person did not win anything. Sorry I said father plural because I was talking about one person in specific. I"m not saying this by “giving in” because I know what I saw but before we go any further and start something stupid, which happens a lot on this site can we just stop this crap?

I only said something cause you said ‘fathers’ and ‘in the end the fathers would get all the equipment’. It kind of started a ‘cheating Dads bandwagon’ and knowing 2 of the fathers of winning kids who are complete stand up guys…well…nuff said.

Just be careful how you word things is all.

You fishing the tourney on Saturday? I got 4 kids (13 to 5) fishing in it and every (**() fish I catch, they’re weighing in…haha. Just kidding
