I am heading to Charleston this weekend to go saltwater fishing for the first time in 15 years and I am ecstatic
What type of bait should I be using this year? Also what would be a decent rig??
Currently set up 25lb mono on an older saltwater rod
Thanks for any advice and suggestions
Well if you’re just fishing for just fish of any kind at the mt pleasant pier I would use a double drop rig with a prymid sinker of about 2-3ozs small circle hooks and fresh shrimp. Try to get the fresh stuff if you can it out fishes the frozen stuff for me at least. That’s really about the best way I’ve found to fish there and it’s given me decent results a few times. I’ve also seen guys using mud minnows on carolina style rigs for flounder I suppose, and live shrimp with floats possibly for trout Im not real sure on that one. Hadrells bait and tackle in mt pleasant is a good place to get tackle but you won’t be able to get fresh shrimp there though they only carry frozen or live. Good luck to Ya and let us know how you do.

Thank you.
Do you think there is better luck at Shem Creek or Folly Pier?

Folly Pier seems to be a pretty big tourist trap, but there are regulars on here that have pulled in some bull reds off of it. If you search for ‘reds’ in the search bar, it should come up.
Folly pier right now is a lot of whiting and small bluefish. Mt. Pleasant would be better for quality fishing currently. Also, the bull reds are seasonal at folly and not the regular, with current time not being when they are there.
They sell bait at the pier but be careful. Last time I got shrimp from there it was complete junk

Ncwalrus,
If you’re willing to pay to split fuel I’ll take you out and you’ll catch far more on a boat than you could dream of on the mt pleasant pier. Pm me and if our schedules align I’ll work something out with you.

Ya few tarpon have been out there. Gonna live line some menhaden and blues this weekend and see what shows up
I plan on throwing out some live shrimp on a bottom double rig then casting around with a lighter weight pole for fun.
Any suggestions for lures/artificial for casting around off the pier?
paddle tails or gulp shrimp on the lightest jighead you can get away with. live mud minnows on carolina rigs or under a cork for flounder trout etc
I fish to leave the rest of the world behind. I fish because I respect the fish. I fish because it’s in my DNA.
Mt. Pleasant pier regulars use a fair amount of Vudu shrimp (natural, pink, pearl & chartreuse), Billy Bay (silver or gold flake), and opening night paddle tails to target trout. The best time is within 2 hours of low tide on either side. Watch out for structure though cause those Vudu’s are expensive to lose.
