mud minnow traps

What do y’all use for bait to out in the traps? And is there a specific way yo put the bait in?

I have seen a broken up blue crab work pretty well (legal size of course). Produced a couple dozen mm in an hour or so.

Just about anything works, hot dogs, fried chicken, cat food, dog food, canned tuna, sardines…fried chicken is one of the best:smiley:

I have always used bread broken up into small pieces. Have a drainage pond by the house, and it works no problem.

I have found that bread, balled up into a ball (to keep it from washing away once it gets soft) works GREAT in brackish water. I never have had much luck with it in stronger seawater. There are a few places off the Ashley where I can load up on mud minnows in an hour or two with bread.

In stronger seawater, I use a half blue crab or a can of tuna partly opened.

plain old french bread, it holds up good

Blue crab works the best but white egg shells work pretty well believe it or not.

Poke a couple holes in a can of Vienna sauge. Got a day’s worth of bait
Don’t forget, all minnow pots must be marked with a float containing your phone and license number. Per Mrs penfishn and the SCDNR!

Beanie weanie’s work great and slim jimss. We also have great luck with old Herron we freeze after Striper fishing. I think the moral of this story is pretty much anything will catch them. The trick is finding the right creek.

I always keep a couple of fish heads in the freezer after cleaning my catch. Works every time.

A pack of Lance Cheese and Peanut Butter crackers.
Hamburger Bun
Half Eaten McD’s burger
Beef Jerky
Dry Dog Food
Mullet Guts from cut mullet or any part of a mullet
White napkin or paper towel
Inside out chip bag (reflective side showing)
What ever you have laying around in the boat/truck that is bright or has some flavor.
In reality, you dont even need to bait the trap. They will use the trap as shelter.

I’m sorry Mr. Stonoman but you should never waste bacon, not even for a great cause like fishing!:stuck_out_tongue:

are mud minnows active in the winter/fall timing?

They can be, especially at low tide on warmer (sunnier) days.

Fall yes, but the colder the less minnows. In the winter its hard to catch a couple dozen. Haddrells gets them imported from FL. in the winter because their scarce here, $3.50 a dozen

I can catch them year round, always use bread!
