Some of the best advice I received about fishing with kids came from a good friend who had kids a little earlier in life than I did. He told me to bring a bucket of mudminnows along when taking the kids fishing. He said bring them even if you plan to fish with artificial lures because your kids attention span for fishing can be very short.
The first trip I took my daughter I heeded his advice and picked up a dozen mudminnows and put them in a 5-gallon bucket. Sure enough after an hour or so she started getting bored and was ready to go. I broke out the bucket of mudminnows and she immediately began to play. Before it was all said and done, she had assigned a name to each of them and had a little game going. The next time I asked her if she would like to go, she wanted to make sure we were going to pick up some mudminnows.
When you think about taking kids fishing, especially when they are very young, you need to make sure you account for something that will entertain them.
