If you’re talking about in the surf, lately most troughs have been full of mullet. On most beaches. With the moon coming full there should be more.
“If it were catching, Everyone would be good at it.”
Was a lot of mullet today in the troughs on IOP near breach. I had some frozen mullet and no net so didn’t catch any, but I saw them there while fishing this morning (just a bit chilly).
I caught a mullet at Edisto Beach State Park in the surf, but after that one nothing else was caught.
We are still talkin’ the nasty, stinky Striped Mullet? Yeah?
Since we are talking mullet…what is the best way to hook them when using them as bait? Through the lips, behind the dorsal fin, etc.? Or is it best to just use them as cut bait?
Ah yes, the Mugil Cephalus, not too bad if you keep them cold and eat them on the same tide you caught them.
Chill down, fillet and skin like you would a trout, egg batter, seafood breading and some hot oil… mmmmmmmm little tarter sauce, we talking good food.
They are also developing roe, the ones I caught last week were starting up (females) and the males were mostly running ripe already.
West end of Folly in the county park, gulley’s at the end, although I have seen several others “harvesting” them with big nets and the mullet are very net shy right now.
Chef, I usually hook the finger mullet (different species) through the back instead of the face mostly because I don’t lose the bait while casting as much. Hard to say what works best, sometimes they like em cut or smashed dead, sometimes live works sometimes not. For the Cephalus, I cut it chunks or fillet and use like strips… it’s a crap shoot, just gotta be out there trying different stuff.
Bueno Suerte.
Hooking live mullet? If bottom fishing hookem’ closer to the tail they will swim up. Under a cork, hookem’ thru the nose, they will swim down. In the surf, just chop them up.
