Music on the Boat?

Can you guys weigh in on music playing while fishing???

Don’t get me wrong, you can’t beat being the only thing above water on the creek with nothing but the sounds of nature around. But, I am often on the boat alone, and sometimes I put the radio on. Nothing crazy loud, but just some “background” music if you will.

Do you think that hurts the fishing? If so, how much?

Just curious as to what everyone thought.

You have to play,Brad Paisley’s,(I’m Gonna Miss Her), over and over:smiley:Well I love her
And I love to fish
I spend all day out on this lake
And hell is all I catch
Today she met me at the door
Said I would have to choose
If I hit that fishin’ hole today
She’d be packin’ all her things
And she’d be gone by noon

Well I’m gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I’m on this lake shore
And I’m sittin’ in the sun
I’m sure it’ll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
That I’m gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I’ve got a bite

Now there’s a chance that if I hurry
I could beg her to stay
But that water’s right
And the weather’s perfect
No tellin’ what I might catch today

Well I’m gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I’m on this lake shore
And I’m sittin’ in the sun
I’m sure it’ll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
That I’m gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, another bite

I do think the fish can hear it. I think it scares them if it is loud or the water is shallow. I’ve seen more than one school of reds scatter just from an excited voice. Sound travels through water much better than through the air, and fish probably hear better than we do, so I keep the sound down while fishing. Plus, I’d rather listen to nature anyway

My wife and I have been to the the Looe Key Underwater Music Festival a few times and I can tell you that the fish disappear from the reef when the music is playing. I never fish with music. If a fish breaks water, or a bird screams, I want to hear it. Other opinions will certainly vary :sunglasses:

speakers vibrate, vibrations go thru hull into water, fish leave

What do you think your transducer does? Fish are not scared of that

It seems to speed along the slow offshore trolling days though.

I think the conditions dictate. If I’m sitting there bait chunkin or shark fishing or something ill definitely play music. But if I’m shallow or stalking some fish I won’t play music. And i never play it loud

No radio. Partly because I can’t find any stations that I like, and I wear out my mp3 player at work all week, so the weekend is when I’m getting AWAY from music lol.

I vastly prefer the serenity of being out on the water. I normally don’t mind hearing the other guy’s radio since it inevitable that you have someone out, somewhere, that thinks everyone else should hear their music… I don’t mind, so long as it isn’t rap, and as long as it isn’t some of this modern “pseudo-country” crap.

Wish I could tell you, but comes Cobia time, the radio will be playing and a couple of adult beverages will be consumed and each baby shark returned will be judged on number of flips and smoothness upon re-entry to water.

If I’m in an isolated area or trolling shallow areas I like it quite. If I’m on the main run with boats all over, I enjoy the radio.

I’ve been in a boat with enough beating around and stomping to wake the dead and still caught fish, then I’ve been deathly silent and not caught a thing.

I usually turn on my radio, but just loud enough for me to hear it. I don’t want to ruin somebody else’s day with my actions, no matter what I’m doing. Like others have said, I don’t turn it on if I’m fishing shallow though.

You and everybody else  When the cobia run is thick at the Broad River bridge, there are 100 stereos cranked up and playing 100 different tunes. Drives me nuts, I have to go find a quiet rip. To each there own :sunglasses:

I think the music vibration is on a difrent frequency level than sonar, and i am talking about spooky fish in clear shallow water, some pretty good fisherman wont even run electronics in shallow water this time of year, but do like you want, its all about a good day on the water anyhow.,but the next time you see mud boils, i told you so

Caught some good fish during the Carolina = Clemson Game on the radio and us doing alot of shouting. I know the fish run with the tide and the ones we run away are replaced by new hungry ones! We play shag music off shore all the time. I guess that is why we dont catch many fish!

Redfish prefer David Allen Coe, and Dr. Hook…it’s science.

inshore the fish will spook. my dad always taught me to be absolutley silent when stalking them down. always had to fish this way for trout up in the mountains as well… people think reds can be spooky… try sneaking up on a trout in a 4 inch deep stream!

offshore though i would def rock some tunes… especially trolling and such

“mr keys”

All great responses. Exact ones I was expecting.

Here’s the deal for me. If I’m out alone and REALLY fishing, it will be silent (usually). If I’m just finishing my day and headed back toward the ramp, I’ll put on some aforementioned Brad Paisley, while I’m on the trolling motor tossing bait around.

If, I’m on with the girlfriend… That’s a different story.

Thanks again for the good conversations gents.

If your really worried about it, don’t play your marine radie through the speakers in the boats fiberglass and all. Just buy a portable handheld radio that’s what I do a lot. So it doesnt vibrate into the water…

Sir Yakerson… I’m really not worried about it, just curious about what everyone else thought about it. But, I do use my iPhone speakers only pretty often.

See some of you folks on the water this weekend probably.

Seems like offshore fish like music …even rap…but especially Hank Williams get em biting too it seems LOL

“Fish On”

ill usually play songs i have loaded on my cell phone in my kayak so i can hear it but not loud enough to disturb others. brad paisley is always a go and dont forget redneck yacht club, ted nugent, and when the only that that bites is the fail whale…“bait a hook” by justin moore
