My first Cobia and Cobia fight!

Well I finished the day yesterday with several Cobia. One of which I caught. He was an inch short so I put him back. It was a decent fight but I had know idea what was coming next!

The second one is a different story. About 15 minutes after the short fish my reel started singing. I was using greenies. They were everywhere. And once I reeled down on him he hit fifth gear and started spinning off line like I have never seen before! Then him came out of the water like a tarpon. I had no idea Cobia would do that!!! I got the anchor rope dropped (I was alone) and the boat headed toward him. I was gaining line but he made another jump (at least 10 ft in the air) and the leader broke! Crap!!! He was huge!!! I am guessing but he had to at least be 50lbs.

Now I am back in Fort Mill trying to figure how to get back down there. Lol. The fight was definitely worth the three day trip!

The help I received was great and I really appreciate it!!!

I hope to get back down before the run is over.

Good for you, Mark! Never heard of one coming out of the water like that.

I have had a couple spinner sharks put on a show like that but it didn’t last long.

I’ve never had one skyrocket but I have had a few swim straight to the top goin Mach 10. Makes you feel like they are gonna tail walk like a marlin! Congrats on your catch and almost catch. Hope you have a chance to make it down again. I’ve been so busy this year I haven’t been but once and I live 15 mins from the boat ramp. I hope I can get out again myself.

I saw DoubleNs comment on spinner shark so I found some YouTube videos to compare. I am pretty certain is was a spinner shark :frowning: Especially if Cobia don’t usually jump. But I am not too disappointed, it was a hell of the fight that I welcome again!

Another contributing factor is the fact that my eyesight has gotten worse over the last three months. I had to return to the boat ramp from eagles nest to get my glasses so that I could tie a knot?.getting old does indeed suck!

Thanks for your help DoubleN!!!

Glad you figured it out! Made a good story tho! Being the guy to hook the first jumping Cobia ever has to feel pretty awesome!:smiley: Just kidding! I figured it was a possibility of it being a black tip or a spinner. Black tips jump as well and resemble a Cobia a lot at quick glance.

No need for a Thanks, just sharing something that happened to me. I wish I had a video of the last time it happened. That thing took off peeling drag, then skied and spun!!! Really cool and the line gave way lol.

I was at Boat & Dock for that seminar you were at. Anyway, hope to see ya around down there.

Good luck,

Lol…I hear ya mad fire! Bring it on! Any amount of “harassment” from the experienced members is worth it! The help I get from posts and pictures make my trips to coast more productive, safe, and a lot of fun!

Tight lines to you guys and thanks again!

Trust me that wasn’t even harassment compared to some of the stuff that goes on around here! I’m just lad you had fun. Anytime something jumps like that it makes it even better. I was anchored up at the bridge one afternoon and had a black tip jump and do back flips 4-5 times before I got it to the boat. Spunky little joker!

Sounds like a big spinner shark. They look like cobia and put on quite the aerial show!

it may not be an every day occurrence, but believe you me, cobia will break water, and they will sail. BIG cobia at that. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Sounds like you had fun, that’s what it’s all about.
