My First Red!!

Hey everyone,

Just started fishing down here since moving down in 2012. Been in surf only so far and yesterday I caught my first red (about 5 or 6th time surf fishing).

Funny thing was about to pull line in due to having to get ready for work, but all of a sudden felt a big pull and it started running. It was a great fight for about 5-6 minutes and finally pulled it in. Luckily a lady was walking near me and I asked if she could take a picture for me. I’m hooked and cannot wait for more!

Great catch! You are now a addict. Welcome.

nice work, your hooked for life. now dont hold them by the lip or some nice folks here may get bent

Nice fish and congrats! Took me over a year to catch a red over 20 inches in the surf, now that I’ve gotten myself a little skiff I’ve had a lot more success. No problem with holding a fish by the lip as long as you hold the fish vertically, better than digging your fingers all into the gills. That idiot Bill Dance holds them horizontally and that can break the fish’s jaw if it’s got any size, sets a great example for those watching as well.

Thanks to our late summer you should be able to pull quite a few more out before the season ends, good luck!

Thanks guys! ya definitely hooked and cannot wait till I can get a kayak to take out into the creeks and rivers. Maybe next year.

I was also holding the line as well. Not really sure what proper technique was haha. Is holding in the gill plates not good as well and horizontally is fine as long as I support the belly or tail correct?
