Got my new Torque Motorized Kayak in last week and finished rigging it this weekend. Installed a 12v battery, an anchor trolly, a milk crate with rodholders and stakeout pole sheath and a Garmin GPS/Fishfinder. I can’t wait to get it in the water…
Wow, thats a battleship! Cool rig

Does the trolling motor kick up in shallow water?

That is a battery compartment under the fishfinder which holds a full size 12v battery. I have the fishfinder straight wired to it. No, the motor does not kick up but it only has something like an 8" draft and to beach the kayak you can just undo one strap and the motor lifts right out. You can replace the motor with a drop-in skeg for paddling. The main downside to the motorized yak is that I have to register it as a motorized vessel and I don’t know if I will qualify to enter any kayak fishing tournaments, but when you’re 137 years old like I am, you take the good with the bad.

There are some kayak tourneys that specifically exclude motorized craft, some others have a motor division if it’s a big enough event, and a few are full open access.
One huge downside to motorized and registered. IF YOU GO OUT AFTER DARK YOU HAVE TO USE MOTORBOAT LIGHTING!!! This is a big turnoff for me. Powerboats see Green / Red / White and they think powerboat and treat you like a powerboat. That can be serious bad news for a yakker.
2nd downside that I always caution people about. Don’t let that trolling motor write a check your body can’t cash. It’s a great tool and really works well for getting you to fish and keeping you in place in current. Just be careful letting it extend your range past the point where you can paddle back under your own power if anything craps out.
Give me a shout if I can answer any questions for you.

hmmm my kayak doesnt have a compartment for the battery, but is your 12v still fairly heavy… because my kayak (the freedom hawk) is very heavy as is and dont want to add any more than like 15lbs
quote:Your best bet is to buy a small 7amp / 12v battery from Radio Shack or Best Buy. It only weighs a couple of pounds and will power your gps/fishfinder just fine. Enclose it in a Tupperware container and glue it to the inside of your front hatch or put it in a dry-bag and just drop it into your small round hatch. Staples, Office Depot, or you can go visit the backside of the grocery store like i did. Sometimes they throw those crates away out back.
Sweet looking set up. Did you build the trailer? Or where did you get it. I’ve been looking for a trailer like that, but they are all crazy expensive.
Wow, holy crap. This kind of makes me embarrassed to even allow my Kayak to touch the water…
thanks and yea ure rig is awesome
