Mysterious Reds

Is anyone else in the Fripp/Hunting Island/Trenchards area seeing much redfish action? We’ve been fishing some of our go-to spots from last year this same time that produced solid reds, but not even a bite most of the time so far this summer.

We launch from Fripp and mostly fish the grass edges and oyster beds on the incoming tide. Wondering if we need to change the strategy or they simply are down this year, or perhaps haven’t moved into the creeks and inlets much yet. Maybe they are in deeper pools? Maybe it’s better in the Broad River area or up on the Coosaw?

Nearshore wrecks have been pretty good for us (BSB, some cobia), but not for reds yet.

Any intel from anyone in the area out there would be greatly appreciated. Glad to share once I find what’s working from my end for reds. Thanks!

I fish the St. Helena Sound area and have found the same thing, although I have fished far less this year than in the past. Almost all my go to spots for reds have been coming up empty. I did find a new school that produced in a new area recently.

I think the redfish bite is turning on. A friend caught 15 yesterday at Edisto. Some of the guides have been using cut mullet…the fish didn’t want artificials or even mud minnows.

I did catch a few trout Saturday am…the best bite since January… Most were just undersized…but good to see them anyway. A friend said salinity was higher after our heavy spring rains, and crabbers have moved traps upriver due to salinity increase.

Coosaw was amazing once the water cleared up after the Honey moon. Here’s a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMRWTFCnkBA

Caperman: Great video! I’m still figuring out reds in the same area you fish. I joined your facebook page and watched your mudminnow video. I got a tip a while back that mcdonalds $1 cheeseburgers work for bait. I’ve tried it and it works great for some reason.

Other than a squashed blue crab, the best mudminnow bait I’ve ever used is fried chicken! They’ll suck the bones dry!

Fried chicken is our favorite pinfish bait too. Don’t know why, but they love it. Works much better than any seafood.
