Narrow Breaker Passage

If I am heading out to the 40 or 60 my understanding is that I can go two ways:

  1. Take the narrow cut that is by the beach when you make a left out of Big Bay Creek
  2. Go past the A, B, and C can bouys which will take you out to big water

Question is how is that cut at low tide? Is it possible to get a center console through without hitting the breaker? If I am going to the 40 or 60 then how much further of a trip is it to just follow the A, B, and C?

Thanks!!

It is considerably shorter to cut through than to go all the way out the channel. It is navigable even with a good size boat but does get pretty shallow. If you kind of hug the beach that usually works. We take our 33ft boat through there all the time.

Hug means 10-12 feet off the beach. It will get down to 2 feet at low water!
A can no longer exists.

You gotta love the South Carolina Lowcountry.

It is only a 20min ride to the 40 (15min if its laid down) by way of the marked channel. I will do a straight shot if the tide is high but those breakers are brutal at low tide. I usually dont chance it.

I broke it down on my plotter one time and it added less than 1 mile to go by the channel. I also like to check the buoys for a cobia or bait fish while heading out.

Straight out. Save what 1/2 mi maybe. If east wind and outgoing tide the waves are stacked in there an on the bars. 2x on cobia - tripletails - and bait on B & C cans on way. Maybe catch Spanish or bluefish blitz on the bar on left too.

You can’t catch 'um on the couch!

In the past, we would cut through all the time in the old CC. Now we just run the channel…It’s easier and less nerve racking. If you decide to make the cut, I would suggest doing it at a point near high tide and spend a little time hunting it on your sounder, then marking several spots on your GPS so you have a reference as to where it is at.
