navy base

Mud and I put in near the marina this morning catching a blue, flounder, and one black bass… thats it. (pitiful considering effort and nice bait).
Looks like they are closing access there Tuesday due to the work going on with the new port and all. Anyone got ideas on where we can put in, on the lower Cooper now? Or does anyone have a friend on city council that we could talk to about getting a canoe/kayak throw-in?

Know a couple people that have been on the city council and will give them a call sometime. Just send me a bit more information about what you would like and I will say somehting about it next time we talk.

Getting ready to head out to PI to do a bit of fishing.

With this sport growing like it is(not just kayak fishing, but all aspects of kayaking) I feel we should have more access to the water. There are three counties and several cities around Charleston and very few canoe and kayak put ins. How much water front property do they own? How much would it cost? Plus aren’t most(if not all?) boat landings designed for boats on trailers?

Mud

All we need is some planks on top of the mud and maybe some gravel down… Hell I’d be happy to just be abel to FISH anywhere near down town wihtout getting run off…

Ken, your right planks would be nice:smiley: Just ask Cut, we’ve done alot a dragging our yaks down the rocks and through the mud just to get to the water:dizzy_face:. Your good at the keyboard…how about getting this same post started on SCKayakfishing.com.

Mud

No doubt fellas, I’d definitely be down to help set up some make shift kayak launches and know a few others who feel the same. The re-store has lots of old builing material for cheap if you can’t scrounge enough from dumpsters. Another cool trick is to put some cheap hinges between your boards so they stay together better.

I’ll take care of it tonight Mud… Does anyone know anyone who owns property or a business that may be able to help our cause? One of our guys from SCKF got permission to set up a landing on some property that somone owned on the Saluda and they are really making a go of it! Gate and control to keep the tards that like to littelr and trash places out… maybe we can find someone downtown that can do the same for us…

CM,did they say when they would open the access back up.What about the people who want to access there boats? There is always Virginia avenue but that is a little ways from there.

reel, its going to be closed for good. Its part of the new terminal, But,just east of there the county has real estate…the Cooper River Marina(its part of the county park system). Does anyone know if Mt.P has a put in at there new park?

Mud

Mud knows a bit more about it than I, but there was a sign saying the ramp/parking area will be closed. Guessing that marina people will still be able to pass by or they will open up the other road, on the marina end.
No offense Ken, but your the politician:smiley:. I, on the other hand, am good at giving advise:smiley:. Maybe you could call the marina (chars county parks) and ask them about us possibly lanching there for a small fee or free…to help promote a greener use of our waters??

Got something else for ya:smiley: How about contacting lowcountrypaddlers.net and seeing if our clubs/fishing forums can work together and my be get something going(this was cuts idea)?

Mud

Noisette Creek. Can they really keep you out of the park/marina like that? How will people be able to get to there boats? Why can they be there and not you? Its public right? I set my minnow trap out there from time to time.

Noisette creek is a ways up the river from where we are talking about. Navy base launch point “was” about 2 miles north of the coal tressel… maybe 4-5miles south of noisette (I’m guessing on these distances). Mud and I have launched at waterfront park before and is a long portage from the parking to water, but accessible. Anything lower, on the Cooper, is not accessible to my knowledge, unless we launch accross big rivers at Remleys.
I wrote a letter to Chas. county parks today and hope they can work with us.

i know where your puttin in at the base (i think) i dont see how they can close the road? but lets say they did, people fish from shore in shipyard creek all the time and wouldnt be hard to throw in there, ive never been there by land, try google earth.

Is this the marina you are talkin about being closed? http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=32.8331814&lon=-79.9355578&z=17&l=0&m=b

Here is a link to a Marina at the base of the CR Bridge that I used to put in at when I lived down town. I just walked in one day and said hey do you mind if I put my Yak in at your dock? And they said sure, no charge. Its an easy paddle from there to the old burned RR tressels. Lots of fish up that way in and around the pilings. I dont remember the name of the Marina but it was right off of Eastbay/Morrison Street near Charleston Recyling.

Other downtown spots I used to put in Kayaks are:

The Citadel Boat Center on the Ashley - Just Stop in and Ask if its cool.

Longborrow Subdivision on the Ashley (near El Cid) - Walking Trail access to a small crabbing dock. I put some stones and plywood out to drag a yak on.

Bad thing is these are both dry at dead low tide. Hope that helps yall.

PS: Anyone know of any good spots on JI to put Yaks in other than Folly Landing, Crosby’s, Sunrise Park, and Bowen’s?

Not talking about the marina, but the sea-plane ramp. We usually put in there or the small parking area on the way. There is a sign saying it is closed now.
thanks cid; and there is the bridge to edgewater that will get you in the stono or coburg creek. I believe its at the end of Wapoo rd.

Maybe Mud and I should just go up and ask the guys at the cooper river marina? Good idea:smiley:

So The seaplane ramp is closed? what did they do put a gate up? if not cant you still park just off the road? This is a great spot and would hate to see it taken away.
