near shore blue fish

My son is wanting to go offshore fishing next week. With everything closed, I thought that perhaps we can catch some bluefish off of the beaches, or near shore; probably trolling.
I have not really ever targeted blues specifically, so I am not sure if they have a ‘season’ or what the correct approach would be.
Can anyone provide me with their insight/experiences?

thanks

Bluefish get thick on the 30-60 ft. reefs in March and April. They are most easily caught by throwing over and past the structure and winding very fast through the mid-depths with a variety of spoons. I have caught them up to 15 lbs. at the 4KI, but most of them are 2-5 lbs. I don’t know if they have showed up yet. I was out a couple of weeks ago and didn’t catch or see any.

Thank you Raddaddy. We may give it a shot next weekend to see what happens.

When I ran a charter boat we used to fish them hard over the wrecks. St. Patricks Day was always prime time. We would get 50 pounds of catfish food from the feed store and chum heavily. Used cut squid for bait. Treat them like dolphin or spade fish, always keep 1 hooked fish in the water and use their schooling tendencies to hold them around the boat.

That's primo inside info. right there!

Bluefish usually saved March and April for us on short, near shore trips  By May the spanish and kings usually moved in for other close options, but in March, it was bluefish.

I took this picture about 1983, every charter boat in Savannah was working the bluefish schools on the wrecks  We all chum heavy and keep a fish in the water. They hold tight to structure and we all fished tight.

Thank you for all the help. Any tips I can get are invaluable. Especially when I want to ensure my son has a good time (kids get bored pretty quickly…)
Now I am wanting to hook up the boat and make the 4 hour drive down. I think that I can be there by 1am; a little bit of sleep and I should be good to go!!
Oops, I forgot I have to work.
Thanks too for posting the pictures. I would imagine the blues were pretty plentiful back then. Much like the BSB now.
