Sounds like a pretty fun day! Those bonita/albies can be a real blast!

As for the redfish, did y’all have a descending device, or did you vent the fish? Those reds don’t handle being pulled up from deep water very well. Those big ones are vital to the overall red drum fishery, so it’s far more important to make sure they swim off healthy and strong.

Not saying y’all did or didn’t do anything, but I’ll provide some links for anyone interested – here are a few options: http://www.rebeccaeberts.ca/resources/barotrauma-awareness/

Everything from fancy tools to DIY options.

Here’s a pretty good thread on our own forum about it too: http://www.charlestonfishin.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=146671

To be that guy, I think the protruding bloody thing by the tale and the dead look in the eye tells you how well they will recover vented or not vented. That said you can’t help what hits your line and I’ve also seen some pretty amazing serval tales of fish from line hanging out there bum, a tailless red fish, half faced sheep head, and a topless drum. But I hate seeing the blown out bum pictures on fish its one of those things for me that when I see it I almost feel it. Could some one with knowledge let me know how bad that is because I assume the worst.

Have started using the SeaQualizer device
was venting before I got it

40inchreds, i’m also thinking those spawners are crab bait + all 3 fish pic taken together at same time…:dizzy_face: just my 2cts

Looks like y’all had a great trip!

Awesome trip guys! Thanks for the report, seems to be rare thing anymore around here.

How do you target the Bonita?

Nice catch. Fishing is great during this time of the year when you are able to catch the weather window right. Please keep me posted when you start to troll! Happy New Years.

After reading the above posts and others over the years in this forum a few things things become obvious.

  1. Most of the forum members extremely enjoy being on the water and fishing with their family and friends.
  2. Most forum members who fish offshore realize there is a substantial mortality rate associated with releasing fish they can not keep or choose to release. They obviously use various methods to try to improve fish survival rates.
  3. Some people who fish and are members of this forum have a difficult time dealing with catch and release mortality and probably feel better about themselves when they convince others that their catch and release mortality rate is zero percent.
  4. The barotrauma, the physiologic stress of the fight, the lactic acid build up, the penetrating trauma, the loss of protective slime coat, and just the act of being lifted out of the water are all significant mortality risk factors that begin once the fish is hooked and add up as it is landed and released. Some posters seem to suggest that they have acquired the magic ability to wish these mortality risk factors away shortly after hooking their fish. This probably justifies to them the bashing of other members who have posted on this forum and have yet to acquire those magic abilities.
  5. Some posters on this forum just like to get off bashing other members of this forum when they post reports or pictures. Other members probably can recognize the offenders. My humble suggestion to these folks would be to find another hobby to get off on.
  6. Finally the three reds that were called crab bait may very well be crab bait, but I doubt it. All were hooked simultaneously and landed with in 3 minutes of being hooked. All hooks were removed and a quick picture taken and they were leased with minutes of being out of the water.
P.S. Bashers, and you know who you are, please re-read points 4 and 5
    tight lines to everyone else

Nice catch!

I wasn’t bashing actually the opposite but if you know that much you should be able to tell that. I will tell you there are a few people on here including myself who put the extra effort and money to do the most we can to increase the odds. I don’t do it for me or as much as I feel I am doing it for the fish and others. I have first hand seen the affects of anglers on fish in some of the places I fish, that’s why people are so secretive about fishing spots because real anglers know what can happen very easily. I don’t think catching and handling them properly is as deadly some think or as the baro syndrome that happens to them, that’s why I asked, I don’t know so I assume it is quiet bad.

I like the sea qualizer. Never had a fish float up after using. Pricey though at around $50 so make sure its well attached. I guess Ill lose one someday to the tax man.

What 40 inch said^^^^ I’m not bashing either only trying to keep proper handling in the forfront , there are several very obvious signs of stress , eyes , protruding anus , bloody streaks , and one very serious, almost a sure slow kill is the fingers inside the gill plates!!These are the future and are probably done for;; the really sad part are the thousands of fry that will never happen!!![:0][:0]
Please don’t view this as a bashing but as pointers to be aware of to help save our resources!!!

The best way to reduce redfish mortality rates is to not fish at all.

Carry on, looks like a fun day!

That seaqualizer is a neat tool.

Everybody gets a taste of a dead fish in the ocean. Malicious handling of fish is a testament to the quality of the fisherman. If I have any question of a fish not surviving…like a snapper/bass/ half eaten sailfish…they are coming home with me. I’ll take the fine.

Very obvious there are two very different views on this subject…One
view is beda#ned the final outcome , do this and that, but continue along my merry way and hope the resource will be there tomorrow and into the future.

The other is to make every effort to do as little harm as possible, perform preventative venting, and to release as quickly as possible.
Most fish can be released without even handling them . Net,vent, cut leader at hook or mouth, photo in net , net back over into water. Point is handle as little as possible, return to water quickly…
Just imagine something pulling and dragging you around by the mouth until you’re to tired to resist any longer ,pulling you out of the
water where you can’t breath, picking your body weight up by your jaw ,holding you in a bear hug and rubbing the protective slime
off your skin while some one is trying to take just the right picture , “remember you’re still trying to breath”, sticking a vent
needle in your gut , and then dropping you back into an enviroment where every d#m* thing there wants to kill and eat you:roll_eyes:.
Make no mistake , I made and am sometimes still guilty of the same
acts, difference is , I’ve been around long enough to remember when
massive schools of all kinds of fish were abundant enough to make catching them common and widespread , not so anymore, if WE</font id=“red”> don’t start to respect what is left our kids and grands won’t have the opportunity. All</font id=“red”> they’ll have left are your smiles in pictures!!! Don’t stop catching , just start the practice of saving and protecting them for the future!!!</font id=“size4”></font id=“red”>
