Fished out of Fripp Inlet yesterday with a good friend’s 11 year old son. Went to the Savannah first caught a bunch of blues, those kept the kid happy. Then hooked up on a number of 22-23 inch black drum.
Headed out parallel to the beach looking for jelly balls. After about 20 minutes of riding around found more than we needed all grouped up in one area…aimed for the Fripp Reef.
Fished the Fripp Reef for about 45 minutes. Instantly started catching BSBs. After about five minutes, my young fishing partners rod tip went down and the drag went out…obviously wasn’t a BSB. Ended up being a little school of 20-22 inch spot tail bass. I thought that was pretty wild out there. We caught them all on mud minnows.
Rode on out to the 6HI and if any of ya’ll been reading some of my posts, I was looking for spades. Didn’t find any and caught nothing but big BSBs.
So here’s my question if anyone’s still reading. Later that evening I heard from a friend that another guide was out at 6HI in the morning and caught many spades and then caught more in the afternoon.
Is there some trick to getting the spades to surface if you don’t see them? I am wondering how he caught them and I didn’t even see them. The third-hand report was from someone very reliable who saw the fish on the fillet table back at the marina.
Am I missing the structure? I mean my depth finder looks like an Atari 2600, maybe I should upgrade. Thought I saw some spades at the Fripp Reef and I dropped a teaser ball down…nothing. Maybe I should have done it at 6HI.
I know there’s no simple answer just seeking any advice. Not complaining either…great absolutely great day on the water. Our box was full when we hit the hill. The seas were smooth for my 17 foot boat and the temperature was actually great.
That kid’s face when he hooked that first bass in 30 feet of water was awesome. No pictures though, just memories.
