nearshore wahoo

Caught some fish that looked kinda like a wahoo at the buoys on the way out of the channel. They didn’t have the stripes like a wahoo does. The buoy had the number 7 on it. They fought pretty good, all in all a good day. The biggest went 38 pounds on the boga grip. I’ll post pics when billy emails them to me. Any idea what they might be?

King Mackerel?

Yeah, Wahoo without stripes, in by channel markers, has to be a King.

I googled it and I think you guys are right. I don’t get a chance to get offshore much, I’ve only got a bay boat. Do they taste good?

lotta boats fishing the channel yesterday,i was wondering what all that hollering was, congrats cataddict…

Cataddic
were you trolling or ballooning or what was on the menu. I have a small CC but i would like to try for Kings. I trolled streach 25’s a couple of weeks ago and caught a monster red but i think it was still to early.

Fishing is the chance to wash one’s soul with pure air.

Some consider the meat a bit oily. Fresh caught and fried is actually quite good. Not fresh . . . . it makes great bait chunks.

Mmmmmmmmm. Mercury.

Not one of my favorite fish to eat, but I’ve caught a lot of them (no expert though). Keep the smaller ones to eat (8-15#), release the larger ones, as they do have an issue with toxins and mercury when they get larger. the way I cleaned them was to gut and cut off the head, cut the fish into 3 inch steaks (not filet), then use the knife to remove the skin. Don’t store them even overnight with the skin on. You can grill, broil, or bake the steaks, or you can use your knife to cut the “turbos” (loins) off the steaks (just follow the contourof the dorsal and transverse spines off the vertebra. Then you can grill, bacon-wrap, or bread these and fry or broil like “fingers”.

As to catching them, the small ones are stupid and hit just about anything, the big tournament fish require some serious effort. The Stretch, 25, Cisco kids, Rapalas, Russell lures, spoons, large bucktail jigs, etc, trolled at a moderate to slow speed will get the smaller ones, live bait and float (stationary or super-slow troll will get larger fish). Troll over the spoil dump area South of the fishing channel also. There a other places, but someone might slash my tires if I start giving out exact locations. I’ve caught them at the Ft. Sumter rip in the harbor while fishing for spanish mackeral. Watch for bait pods and fish skying at sun up.

Barracuda, big ones, hang out on those buoys all the time…wouldn’t recommend eating those, but to each his own. They do it on the left coast, but our water is way warmer here.

Barracuda are just as much fun to me to fight, but we generally release both species. As long as you had a good fight and time, its a win win. Congrats.

…because everything is a conspiracy!!!

I trade it out on South Church Street.Umm!

Barracuda, smaller ones, eat a lot better than kings!

Long Enuff

I’ve never had a good fight from a baccaruda.

They’ve always surfed in.

Slow smoked kings and Spanish are great for dip

grab the gaff and another cold beer

Cataddict… i was chuckling at this post all weekend whilst we were king fishing our behinds off at the miracles tourny… since you got all these replies and had all those folks fishing around the bouy… its time to fess up. you knew… classic…
