Need help: Bull Redfish / Kings / Bait

Heading down to Harbor Island on Saturday and would really love to anchor up and put the family on some big redfish in either St. Helena or Port Royal. Are there productive spots in the Beaufort area like the Dynamite hole and the Grillage out of Charleston?

If not, would I have better luck going for kingfish? Also, where should I try to find bait? I know this is asking for a lot of info but it would be awesome to see my Grandad land a big one. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We will be fishing 3 days straight and promise to post reports if it helps…

Good luck trying to catch a bull red this time of year - just won’t happen. Kingfish are gonna be rare close in as well. I would try for sharks if I just wanted a hard pull.

jeb, i have yet to find anything close to the dynamite hole or the grillage in the beaufort area. makes me realize just how much i took it for granted whilst fishing in charleston. the bull reds aren’t easy to find right now, but you can find slot reds in relative abundance. bait shouldn’t be too hard to find, menhaden off of the beach @ hilton head in the broad river and mullet+greenies in the shallows around bay point. good luck!

(sorry, my caps lock isn’t working)

Hey guys, really appreciate the info. Slot reds would be great as well but the boat I’ll be in is a larger cc without a trolling motor. That being said, are there areas better than others where we can anchor up and put out bait? I know these kind of spots are pretty personal but it would make for a much better trip if we didn’t have to spend a whole day scouting.

Also it sounds like my other option might be to go for tarpon (and probably catch sharks). Are there tarpon holes or should we be at the mouths of rivers in the sound. I know theres a lot of water down there and really just looking for some specific spots that will up our chances on catching anything. Thanks Again!

No bull reds around yet. We’ve caught numerous slot fish and over slot up to 30" in recent weeks in both the surf and at the nearshore wrecks. Menhaden have been scarce in Fripp Inlet, Fripp beach, Story River, and Trenchards. Lots of mullet around on the low water to make up for it. I’ve heard no reports of any kings; the spanish mackeral never showed up so this probably has something to do with it.
