I’m a long time Great Lakes salmon fisherman who has been relocated to the Charleston area…busy buying a new rig for the area…simple question to begin with…how far should I expect to run for Kings…wahoo…dolphin?
I know it will depend on the time of season but any general help is appreciated.
Kings when they get in usually around mid summer you can catch them right off he beach but I would recommend being comfortable running 15-20 miles out. Wahoo and dolphin 40-60 miles. These are very loose estimates

Yeah no worries…just real leary of these types of websites for information…lots of fluff …its not my usual to be a fish out of water…you are what you is…yankee for sure but love to fish,…got to ■■■■■■■■■ hunt…thanks …good luck to all
There are a lot of helpful people on here. To answer your question hca is pretty much right on. Kings are close right now. Mahi are hit and miss this time of year but are anywhere from 40 to 70 miles depending on water temp. I fish out of N. Edisto is you ever want a buddy boat.
Seabee 2, read this forum for a while, and you will figure out who’s a smart Alec , and who will give sound advice. I’ve only met Paul Godbout ( aka Sellsfish ) personally once, but I believe if you can get him to help, he will not steer you wrong.
I’m just really happy SB2 called them by their proper name here, dolphin.
Kings can be right off the beach to 60 miles out. Dolphin and wahoo are mainly Gulf Stream catches but you can find dolphin inshore a good bit when the water heats up in the summer.
Good luck on the new rig, take your time and do your research. Honestly it might benefit you to charter for a while so you can figure out what you need and don’t need.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

SeaBee, welcome to the sight! Sorry about all the smart arse comments. Used to be we had some supper guys willing to give you everything but the kitchen sink in information. We’ve got some lifelong fishermen on here that give advise and get slammed on stupid stuff. I think most of them gave up sharing info because of it.
If you ever see anything posted by Sellsfish, take it to the bank.
Salty gave some good advise. Our search function on this sight can be a bit tricky, but a lot of information on what you asked has been put out there. Weed through it and you’ll find what you need.
Best of luck to you and welcome to Charleston.
What Bonzo said, give it a few days, have some think skin for those that have nothing to add, and wait for the good info.
Thanks to all for the welcome and the info and the buddy boat offer from Cbeck…look forwrd to putting this together…making the mistakes and learning from them…hell I remember way back when spooling up Mitchel 300 reals for king salmon and having them run every bit of line off…I’m not the smartest guy but learned about level wind reels pretty quick.
Will look to this site for guidance from the boys who know it!
Have a great day
Stick around, you’ll quickly figure out who the helpful ones are and who aren’t. Some folks forget what it is like to be new to an area and/or type of fishing.

Welcome to the site, stick around, there are some good guys on here. Ive been a lifetime fisherman but new to saltwater on a boat, and Ive been getting some really good advice.
Funny, i remember fishing freshwater in England with Mitchel 300’s, those things were indestructible,

For an offshore boat in our world I would recommend nothing smaller than 23ft ~25ft - runabout Center Console, preferably with twin motors. Same rig is OK for our Inshore fishing.
Fuel range(how much gas can she hold) and seaworthiness is key for the offshore/nearshore game here. We have extremely rough water for 1st hour’s run heading offshore, then it smooths out somewhat.
Welcome to the Low Country, I am from Beaufort, but fish same water.
Look at Sportsman 23~25 feet at Hanckel Marine in Charleston.
If I can assist further, let me know. We got here in 1790. Welcome!!
