New Folly Pier

They’ve been talking about it for awhile, looks like it’s a go;

Ya know, it must be nice living in Neverneverland. Remind me to come visit you, when I need a break from reality.

Help me out…the wording is kind of contradictory. It’s not a new pier, just refinishing the existing one?

A new pier could be coming to Folly Beach.

The Charleston County Finance Committee has approved $45 million to go towards park and recreation projects.

Seven million dollars would go towards re-building the Folly Beach pier.

It would take two years to do the design and permit process with another two years for the actual work.

This new pier would be different than the current one having concrete pilings hold up the pier with a wooden flood base.

They got 7 mill to do repairs over the next 4 yrs. Basically more of what they have done. Concrete wrapping the post was a big part of what the news talked about.

Rumor is that the existing one to be dismantled and replaced and extending further out.
Another rumor is a new will be built first beside the existing one, then the existing one will be dismantled.
What they’re actually going to do, don’t know

They are NOT repairing current pier. The new pier will be exact same design in concept as Jax pier was. Concrete pillars with removable wooden deck. 8 million seems a little low though. consider only over concrete piers I have fished both were upwards of 20 million…lol

Man it would be so nice if they make it long, no more battles over rod holder 0

Idk last time saw a battle over rod holder 0…lol I would just prefer an actual T not a diamond.

Amen

Longer = less crowded ? If you build it they will come…

The better the fishing the more they come. If it was a lot longer it would be a bigger attraction.

So is the current pier gonna be closed while they build the new one?

No real info as of yet.

They might want to improve on the Jax Beach pier design. It’s closed because of storm damage, two years to repair. Opps …

There is no designing for mother nature’s worst without the cost being unrealistic to do so and even then she will show us that she is mightier than us eventually!

Prestressed concrete piles with concrete pile caps and concrete flat slab with a T at the end would get the most gang for the buck IMO. Along with some well designed utilities such as running water for bait and fish cleaning stations, electricity, some covered areas to get releif from sun if needed and maybe even a rest room with a grinder pump to get it back to the “hill”. Maybe even a built in bait tank of some sort. Built in rod holders.

Permitting these things is a nightmare! My first thought was they would try to treat it as a “maintenance and repair” permit and just go down the pier replacing the old with new, saving just enough of teh old to qualify for that type of permit, but that would be so much work that it wouldn’t qualify anyway. I am not quite sure why they would use the word, “repair” to describe this unless the plan is to reninforce the existing wood piles with a jackets filled with concrete or epoxy as we are doing to the piles at the Wando terminal now. That would not be the way to go IMO for this pier. While a little cheaper than replacing with prestressed concrete piles, it is still alot of money and you have a structure with a band aid on it when you are done!

I am curious to see what the final plans look like.
