New house build

@EF1, I wasn’t sure where to post this, so please move where appropriate. Thanks!

June 2024. Started planning everything and clearing land.

Got the pond dug and driveway built. The old Cat 426 earned its keep!

We had a few setbacks, as is normal. Along with many other good times with friends and family.

Fast forward to a few months ago to save the boring details.

Jan 2026. New well installed by Mitchum’s. $6500. Highly recommended.

Transformer and power run by Berkeley Electric, all free and underground.

Slab poured 2 weeks ago. Ordered the lumber package last Tuesday. That includes framing, trusses, doors, windows, etc. Hoping to start that in 2 weeks, or less.

I’m making a natural swim pond between the house and the big pond.

And, a putting green for us old people.

Wife is very happy, which makes me not worry about getting killed in my sleep.:rofl:

Any questions, comments, recommendations are welcome. I’ll post more as we progress.

How many gallons per minute and how deep on the well?

Is the swim pond for you and the Mrs, or for the critters

or both, lol

looks great, can’t wait to see it happen

I’m excited to watch this build!!

Well is 80’ and 60GPM.

Swim pond is for people. Im doing this because it’s half the price of a good above ground saltwater pool. Plus, add in the cost of adding decks, etc, and the chemicals, etc, for a regular pool.

These natural swim ponds use biofilters(plants, rocks, gravel, current)to clean the water naturally. Crystal clear, chemical free. Basically, I dig the area where the pond site is and pile up the dirt, adjacent, which is where the biofilter begins and also creates a waterfall back into the pond. Current runs across the pond into an intake bay/filter and gets pumped back up to the biofilter.

Full disclosure, I will have to buy some boulders and landscape rocks. All in, im around $10k.

Ingrounds were never in our budget as they start at $60k around here.

Big pond is for critters. Hoping to get it stocked this month. Minnows, bream and channel cats to start, based on the biologists recommendations.

Me, too brother! Stay tuned.

How big is your pond?

You don’t need to buy mosquito minnows. They will show up naturally.

I have a linear acre pond (~650’) ish around. My fish did well until that bad freeze a few years back. All my cats were floating after that. Restocked with 200 catfish. I think probably 50-60 survived and they are around 10-12" long now at best guess.

I did install a solar fountain for oxygen after the freeze as I was told it might have saved my previous cats. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but i think this kit was like $400 on Amazon. More when you add batteries, which i haven’t done yet.

The bream will reproduce kinda easily i think. Add some pebbles for beds is what i was told. I have a fancy auto feeder, but you don’t need that. Go throw a handful of feed out at dusk every night and they’ll be eating out of your hand in no time!

Ace Hardware in Walterboro, Westbury, has FISH DAYS every so often. Usually posted on their Facebook. They are good people to deal with.

Bream and cats are easiest to get established they say. If you want bass, concentrate on them, but apparently they need larger ponds, good structure, and lots and lots of food.

And DNR told me to stay away from crappie for what its worth.

Tractor supply sells good high protein floating Catfish food. The bream and cats gobble it up.

And FYI, gators will eventually find your pond. Don’t ask me how i know.

Yes, I got the same info from DNR and my supplier. The pond is smallish, just under 1/4 acre and 10’ max depth. Looking forward to how things progress.

I’m doing a 110v water fountain. 1/2hp, as they recommend 1 hp per acre, and mine is about 10k sqft, and 10’ max depth, so I’m just under a quarter acre.

Only new update is the lumber package is being delivered Monday and they they hope to start by Wednesday. I’ll have pics asap.

In the meantime, this fella stopped by to say hey.

And, i spent 8 hours at MUSC yesterday getting radioactive scans. No worries, I’m good. Just a new procedure to help my back pain. They say…

It’s called a SPECT scan.

I didn’t glow in the dark. Im just naturally radiant.

My brother in law had a SCS implant, and it literally changed his life.

They can do unbelievable things anymore

for what it’s worth I’ve always heard they issue a weak back with a strong mind, (and vice versa ), so you e got that going for you

hope it gets better before you have to start slinging a hammer or landscaping that oasis

I was waking up stiff in my mid back for the last year or so. Maasages and chiropractic didn’t help much. I cut out sugar almost completely six weeks ago. I feel like a new man today. That sugar was causing lots of inflammation. Dropped some weight too, but most importantly i feel great.

The best thing I’ve done for my back in years was #1, lost some weight.

#2, (and a close second) was getting a new mattress.

I had a good idea about #1 for obvious reasons, but the new mattress, just wow. We’d obviously kept the old one far too long, lol

The wife was concerned about gators.

I just told her I’ll put up a “No gators” sign.

Works for everything else, right?

I hope you treated the soil under the slab with chlordane
If not
It’s not too late
Just have to drill a few holes
I hope you have a drought until it gets dried in

I haven’t seen chlordane in a long time. There is still some in the neighbors barn, but I think they outlawed that stuff in the '70’s.

IF you can find it, so I am told, it is worth a miners pension.

@sman Old guys like us are the only ones with any left, or know anything about it

It’s been a while since I built anything
I’ll have to use what I have left sparingly
Bought it at blackwells hardware
Thanks for the info
I might be overseeing a build in the near future
And by that I mean being a pain in the a$$ to all the contractors but it’s my land .lol

Yes, it’s all treated and had the soil compaction test done. Thanks for asking!

They absolutely will find your pond. I’ve had several show up since we dug the pond. They are usually between four and five feet. The biggest has been just over six feet long.

They all end up in the same place.
