I need a new fishing reel for the surf and im looking for a workhorse that will last. But, I can’t spend more than 80 bucks i know thats alot to ask for but it needs to be an open face reel. Ive bought new reels once a year every year and im sort of tired of paying 30 bucks a year on a piece of crap.It needs to be able to pull in a decent size(3 to 4 foot)shark. And any suggestions for fishing line?
Check out the PENN Fierce ($69) or PENN Sargus ($79). I promise you will be more then pleased. I give you my word.

I agree with Nasty Dawg. I have never used a Penn Fierce, but I have a Penn Sargus 5000 I have been using for 3 years and I have never had a problem with it. Very solid and smooth with plenty of power. I have mine spooled with 30lb test braid. I would recommend going by Haddrells Point. I believe they carry the Fierce and Sargus in all sizes at fair prices. They can also recommend mono or braid lines and spool it up for you.
Thanks, I had already looked into the penn fierce and thoght it was a great reel but whats the difference between the two?
The biggest difference between the two is that the Fierce has a graphite rotor and the Sargus has an all metal rotor. The Sargus also has one more ball bearing. Both the drags and internal components are the same.

you can pick up up at Haddrells Point Tackle or The Charleston Angler here local as well…support the local guys…they can, and will, also give you advice on when, where and how to target whatever fish you are looking for…

They talk to the local charter captains daily and can tell you the best techniques, equipment and times to catch fish. They have never steered me wrong. They work on the rods and reels they sell also, great bunch of guys. If you want to catch fish, just go in there and start talking to them.

What rods would y’all match up with one of those reels? Like IsleofpalmSurf, I’ll be surf fishing for some decent sized sharks, reds, etc.
I’ll be picking up two of these outfits locally when I get down to Seabrook next week - one for me and one for my son. FYI junior is just 12 years old but he isn’t really a kid anymore - he’s getting near man-sized and he knows how to handle a fishing rod on the beach - he’s also a lefty if that matters). Thanks in advance for the advice.
Here is a good deal for anyone looking for a surf combo .
This is not my ad just thought I would pass it along .

Im Going with the Penn Fierce. And Thanks to everybody who responded, ill be sure to check out Hadrells Point. Ive already got an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5500 Spooled With 20 pound test that ill be usig with a popping cork down at breech inlet i was just looking for a reel to fish on the bottom. Ill Be Sure to check them out though.
Thanks, Daniel
I’m 13 and I like to use a 10 ft. rod in the surf. If you get the bigger Penn Fierce or Sargus maybe a 12ft. Don’t underestimate his abilities to chuck some lead. At 10 years old with my 10 footer i could consistently cast 30yards.

I’m a high class redneck.
Fishing is a delusion entirely surrounded by liars in pfgs and buffs.
Yakman, that’s when I was only ten( realize I am now 13 and can chuck big bait’s 40-50yards+) plus it was my first “large” surf setup. In the surf you have other factors playing in such as loss of depth perception, wind, and heavy line. You generally see people casting 40-50 with large rods (I was ten and wasn’t far behind) unless you are an experienced surf caster with no leader and just a weight. I actually find casting smaller, lighter rod’s with jigs much easier. So all in all I get where your coming from but that wasn’t that bad considering nobody taught me how to fish( dad’s not a big fisherman) I was 10, and hadn’t done much fishing. And always remember not all the big fish are in the deep water, I was still able to catch my fair share.

Man, you are hard on reels! I’ve got several that are 25+ years old. What is happening to your reels? Do you rinse all your stuff after every trip?

Iv’e posted on here a lot and you weren’t talking to me but unfortunately jimIslander reels are not made with the same quality as they used to be Back in the day a zebco was a good reel and some still use there zebcos that are 25 years old but now a days zebco is one of the laughing matters of the fishing world because they are mass produced in china by machines along with other reels.

Well, my old ones were generally Garcias or Penns, but I did use Zebcos back in 1960s and 70s.
All my latest are Shimanos. Even the cheapies (Spidercast, Mitchell, cheap Shimonos) have lasted as long as I clean them up after each trip.

I agree with Jim about the cheap reels, I have some cheap shakespeares and shimano reels I use out in the surf and as long as you clean and oil them they will last you awhile. I have some shakespeare reels I bought from K-mart and they are about four years old and they have been dropped in the water and drug down the beach, and after every trip I rinse them and oil them. If you want a nice set up go and ask some of the local guys. I have found that Okuma, Diawa, and Shakespeare Tidewater holds up fine on the beach. The question you have to ask yourself, “how much money are you willing to watch go down the river.”
The first one i had Was a shakespeare tiger where the Little metal rod in the hade ground down till it wouldnt reel anymore and The second was a zebco saltfisher in which the anti-reverse switch broke. This is why i am going to spend a little extra for the penn Fierce 6000. I already have an Abu garcia 5500rigged for lures as stated before im only 14 as well Stuckonland. The abu was a sort of “heirlume” After my great grandfather passed on a few years ago.
Anyone have sugestions on line For it?
30 pound braid is a good all around line for inshore/surf salt. No wind knots. Easy to tie. Holds most anything you will catch. If you are fishing for sharks add a steel leader.
GREAT to see you young men so interested in fishing! Hope you bring your girlfriends too.
