New rifle recommendations

Thinking about buying a new rifle. I have a 30.06 that was a gift from my grandfather. It has a plain Jane single power scope on it. I don’t really want to change it up because of sentimental value. I usually strictly bow hunt and haven’t shot a deer with a gun in 6 years now. Friend of mine asked me to participate in the Draw hunts with him this year so I did and we got drawn for Donnelley in October. I’d like to have a new rifle by then I don’t need anything fancy. Would like to spend less than $500 on combo rifle and scope (really won’t use it much so I can’t justify spending more). Are there any combos that are worth the money out there? Thinking about a .308 or 7mm-08. Opinions on what I should look at… Or what to stay away from. Thanks

Might look at Savage Axis or Mossberg Trophy at Dick’s Sporting goods, for such a combo.

Ruger American Rifle. Looks like a well built rifle for a good price. I would stay far away from the Remington 770, it feels like a piece of junk.

I would use the gun you have and spend $500 on the scope.

But if you have that much sentiment for it you cant go wrong with a Ruger M77 in .270 or 30-06.

Not sure when they made the change but my older one had an adjustable trigger pull, but my newer model requires spring change.

what kind of rifle is it? prob better than anything you could buy for 500. i would look into upgrading the scope

Remington woodsmaster model 742. I really don’t want to change it up. It’s an auto loader would like to give a bolt action a try. I have killed a lot of deer with the remington just feel like retiring it and try something new. Not wanting to put a lot of money into a new rifle just because I bow hunt so much. Don’t really get into the rifle hunting as much figure maybe a new toy my keep me interested for a bit.

I was listening to Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk radio this morning and they were giving an range analysis of the Ruger American. They were shooting (hitting) 6" targets at 1,000 yards! Said it was the best out of the box rifle you could buy for the money. Retails about $300. Leaves $200 for a scope. I like .270 caliber myself.

like cracker said, the ruger is prob the best for the money. My nephew got the savage in 7mm08, ammo is high

keep an eye on armslist for something used

I haven’t found 7mm-08 ammo priced to bad, around 28$ a box. Hell, 30-06 is 22$ a box so 6$ isn’t an issue. Looked at getting a .257 Weatherby mag and that ammo is HIGH, double the money. Ruger American is a decent gun but the Savage model 11 with the accutrigger is the ticket in that price range.

I have the Ruger American Rifle in .270 and love it. Great gun for the money. Just added a Redfield scope and was around $600 for the scope and gun.

Buy a Savage 10 or 11. If you want to try another cartridge you’ll need a barrel, barrel nut wrench and a set of go/no go gauges. It takes 10-15 minutes to change the barrel and you got a completely different rifle. Savages are the best OTB gun in that price range. The accutrigger is 10X what Ruger and Remington put in their guns. There are also a good many aftermarket options available for them.

Lots of glass in the price range you’re looking at. Every lense in it is ground and polished in the same factory and half are assembled in the same facility on different lines. None of it is very good when crunch time hits. I’d spend $500 on the rifle, then save up until I could spend at least that much or more on the optic. Even the most accurate rifle is worthless if you can’t see what you’re shooting at. Low end scopes do not offer that option no matter what you hear.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I just got the Remington model 700 Varmint SF in 308. Shot sub MOA with Federal Premium 150 grain nozzler ballistic tips at 100 yards. Then, three shots at three water jugs at 317 yards…three waters exploded. This is the first rifle I have owned with a heavy barrel, and I won’t be buying another rifle without a heavy barrel. The weight makes it soooo much easier to shoot.

Thanks for the replies guys. I picked up the Savage model 11 in 7mm-08. Gonna use the Nikon for a while and upgrade later on when I have the extra cash. I’m gonna be taking 100-200 yard shots at most so it will be good enough to do what I need it to for now.

Find someone that loads. Buy the components for this load and thank me after you kill everything you shoot at.

Rem, Win or Federal brass. Win LR primers. Hogdon H4350 powder with a 45.5grn charge and a 150grn Nosler Ballistic tip. Set it 0.020 off the lands. I’ve yet to find a 7mm08 of quality that won’t shoot it sub-MOA.

What kind of ammo does everyone shoot for a .270? Just curious to see what people are using, thanks.

Core -loc 130 grain. I’ll probably re-sight and go back to a 150 grain.

yep core lok 130 grain for .270

I have some very good scopes for sale. Check them out in the swap shop. That Nikon UCC has the high end glass manufactured in Japan. Much better then the monarch made today. Saltydog can chime in.

Earlier this year I purchased a stainless Ruger American in 308. I wanted to keep the cost as close to $500 as possible so based on a recommendation from a trusted source I purchased a Minox 3x9 for $160.
The first 3 shot group out of the box was right at an inch and after some load development I got the 3 shot group down to the .06 inch range. I have been impressed with this setup especially for the price. I own Leopold, Zeiss, Nikon etc and I would rate the Minox as about as good as a Monarch and just under Conquest in glass quality. I also like the eye relief which stays steady at 4 inches through most of the magnification.

3 shot group after load development.

1st 3 shot group out of box.
