new sheepshead regulations

From SCDNR

A bill changing regulations for sheepshead (Archosargus probatocephalus) took effect upon signing by Governor Nikki Haley on Thursday, June 7.

Because sheepshead are largely caught in state waters, federal regulation of this species was terminated in April. Consultation with S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) marine biologists and the fishing public indicated that it would be wise to have some harvest limits for the species. Fishing pressure for this species has been growing in the last few years.

The new regulations for sheepshead allow 10 fish per person per day not to exceed 30 per boat per day with a 14-inch total length minimum size limit. Using circle hooks is no longer a requirement when fishing for sheepshead.

That seems pretty fair.

What are the other changes I heard are to take place first of July in the salt water?

Don’t forget to your license expires on June 30th…Just sayin…easy to forget in a rush.

Wish they would go with the “good for 1 year from date of purchase” as some other states have done. Prevents the big rush that is a pain for all including our friends at Boat & Dock Supply.

Wish someone would do a better job of getting the word out on these new regs that go into effect immediately upon receiving the governor’s signature. I had know idea that such a bill was being reviewed much less signed when I went sheepshead fishing with my dad last Friday. And yes we kept one that was less than 14" long. I wonder what “the man” would have said had we been checked at the landing?
