This is my evening stand. I’ll be sitting about 35 feet up a pine tree in the patch of woods across the field in the morning times. My corn pile will be at the end of the “tunnel” in the first pic. I can see it from the morning and evening stand. I had to set it up this way because of the sun. I won’t be able to see well in the evenings because the sun goes down in the corner where the corn is going to be placed. Also, I can get into the morning spot without ever setting foot in the field, which I think is critical.
168 Grain Berger Classic Hunters sitting on top of 77.3 grains of RL-22. They shot .475 at 100 yards, and they were running 3050 fps over the chronograph. It was no problem mashing up milk jugs full of water at 300 yards 5 for 5 as well. I have some Sierra 165 SBT’s that shoot just as good running 3200 fps over the chronograph. Those dirt bag wood goats ate up my cucumbers in my garden, so they are gonna pay. So far, the farmer has not planted this field, and I don’t think he will this year. If he don’t, you can bet I will be making a food plot out there in this big field too. The big field is not terribly wide…roughly 300 yards at its widest point, but it is 978 yards long.

Nice, and well thought out! I predict some near future Meat Mashing!!
So, I went to my new spot yesterday evening to put red flagging tape on my trail that leads into my morning spot from the highway. I slipped all the way to my tree taking my time, and between 7 and 8pm yesterday, there were at least 15 deer in the field and a bunch of turkeys. I got a pic of some of them. Right after getting to my tree and putting a flag around it, I eased up to the edge of the field, two big does were standing 30 yards away. The egrets were bothering them, and the two were being chased in circles as the egrets pecked at them. I suppose they had enough of that and started towards me, and they ended up coming with in 10 yards of me. The two does were up wind, so they didn’t have a clue I was there. After those two passed, it seemed like deer started popping out all over the place in the field. Oh boy…this season is gonna be fun. Big boy gets shot first. Then, I might stretch the legs on the meat masher on a few of those big fat girls way out in the field.

You loaded those rounds Skeeter? If so nice work! You have you’re own Chronograph?
Yup. I loaded them. And yes, I have a chronograph too. You can’t solve the math on bullet trajectory if you don’t the muzzle velocity. The load data gets you close sometimes, but sometimes it is waaaaayyy off. For example, 46.6 grains of BL-C(2) and a 165 Nosler BT says 2698 fps in the load data, but it is running 2830 out of my rifle at less than max load at 46 grains. Then, with the Sierra GK SBT’s, the load data says a max load runs 2700 fps, but .5 over max load is still 30 fps slower. So, the chrono gets you much closer to the real muzzle velocity…but, even that is not perfect–still just closer.

Good looking hunting spot Yall sure do go to a lot of trouble just to shoot a wood goat, but to each their own
Those cartridges look like they could take down an elephant! They are 300 Win mag, Cracker with 168 grain Berger Classic Hunters on top of 77.3 grains of RL-22. It might make a mess inside of 100 yards, but at distance, they will do a good job…bang and flop. Forget looking for them in the skeeters and briars.

Exactly...because, after all, the deer food plot must be the prettiest food plot in the WHOLE world. Otherwise, you won't kill any deer with out spending hundreds of dollars on stuff you don't need just to shoot a woods goat.

Huh?
That field is not even planted, poly. Just weeds.

So, you’ll just hunt over a corn pile? No planting for the deer at all?
I will eventually put out corn, and I might plant a small spot in this field if the farmer does not plant it this year. So far, it has not been planted by the farmer, and I suspect it won’t this far along. If I do plant a small spot, I certainly won’t go through a bunch of testing and other garbage to plant something like Iron Clay peas or oats. Those things will grow almost anywhere within reason, and they grow easily. Again, plow it in to powder. Plant it. It will grow. With peas/beans or oats, it really don’t even need fertilizer either to do the job for wood goats. You don’t need a drill either. Just sling them out there and lightly cover them. It will grow.
So, poly, what is your point? What kind of debate/garbage are you trying to lead me into?

Don’t get so hostile, you originally claimed that you would be putting in a plot, in the field the farmer has let lie fallow. Simply dumping corn is not planting a food plot.
You are correct about that field, if it was planted last year by a farmer you shouldn’t need any soil amendments. My advice for soil sampling was directed to someone who was just starting out with a virgin field, and had no clue what the ph level was or other nutrients.
Sure herbicide is not in your best interest if you continue hunting different places each year, I have planted the same food plots for the last 15 years, its in my best interest to rid all weeds. Weeds go to seed several times a year, if you do not break that cycle, you will eventually end up with a weed plot.

I’m putting in a plot at my place. I am still waiting to see what happens with the field in this spot until I plant anything. Even if I do plant in this spot, it will still only be a small kill plot. I’m counting on the “weeds” to help me out in that department as well. Tall weeds (knee to waist high) give the deer a false sense of security. Not being hostile. The majority of us on the site have learned what to expect out of the poly poster, and most of it is either overly critical or the “know-it-all” responses. Being “on guard” is a little different than being hostile. I just don’t think it requires a Master level thesis for (1) prep ground, (2) plant seed, and (3) watch it grow for deer food plots. The crop is not going to be harvested, and the majority of stuff we plant for deer is very simple to grow except in rare or few instances. In reality, the hardest part is having or borrowing a tractor with he right implements. If I was being hostile, trust me, you would know it, and you would not have any misconc
I think I’m going to plant about 200lbs of Iron Clay Peas on the area I plowed, and I think I’m going to wait until Aug 15th to do it. Then, I’ll plant oats there around mid Oct.

Every time I planted a pea patch too soon the deer cleaned it up before the season ever came in. And that first few days of the season always seemed to be the best time to get that big boy Skeeter. After hearing a few pops the old buck knows it time to duck and cover till the rut starts up. And five for five on milk jugs at 300 yards is smoking. Best of luck this season.

Oh yeah…it open 1 September for me, so I’m trying to balance it close enough to opening day for the peas to be doing their job and HOPE the wood goats don’t mow them down too fast…but trying is better than nothing I suppose. Thanks man! Good luck to you as well.
