Hey guys! New to the forum and new to Charleston fishing. I live in SC but all my life I have done my saltwater fishing in NC. I’m not new to fishing by any means but I am a little green when it comes to surf fishing and especially surf fishing in Charleston. The lady wants to try and get into fishing so I went to take her out and put her on a lot of fish on the surf. Don’t want to go on the pier because we all know the pier can get crazy on weekends sometimes and it’s not the best environment for someone who can’t cast but wants to learn. I want to target some whiting since they aren’t all that difficult to catch and when the bite is on it really is on. Read through the forums and you guys have tons of info on redfish, and for good reason, but not much on whiting and where to catch them. I’m not trying to steal anyone’s honey hole or anything so just a point in the right direction would be great because I don’t really know where to start. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated as well. Read up on some posts you have about troughs which were great and I’ll have to pay attention when I go out there and try to better understand that. You can PM me if you would prefer. Any help would be awesome!
Any beach will do. Find the troughs. At least 14’ mono line tied to a double drop rig with 1/0 circle hook and a 2-3 oz pyramid sinker to HOLD bottom. Get local fresh medium shrimp and cut into small pieces. Whiting love them, and so do several other species. Don’t forget to lightly rinse your rod and reel off when you get home, even if they are “made for saltwater”. Good luck!!
do work live life
Yep any of the beaches will work for whiting. Double drop rig 1/0 circle or J hook. 3 oz sinker. Cut shrimp or cut squid work great for bait.
Thanks for all the advice and PM’s! We were thinking about going down to IOP this weekend either Friday or Saturday. I see that it is suppose to rain pretty good today through Thursday down there however. What does this mean for surf fishing? Does the bite usually die down after a lot of rain due to visibility issues in the water? Sorry if that seems like a very beginner question but I just want to make sure. Different things apply to different areas of fishing.
