New to ladys island waters. No luck finding reds

We just bought a home on ladys island and im starting from scratch as far as fishing areas. Im new to the waters over here. I mainly fished the broad and chechesse for the past few years. So… I launched at lucy point creek twice this past week and tried to explore and find some reds, but didnt find a single fish. I know there some good areas and seems by some reports people were tearing up the reds. Anyone have any tips on some good areas to look or try. I didnt stay in lucy creek, i explored the main river down to the combahee

Sounds like you’re on the right track to me… With the Lowcontry Redfish Cup coming up in a couple of weeks I don’t think folks are gonna offer up their “spots”. Burn some water up instead of fishing… Scout more fish less until you find them. You will find them. Good luck!

wait for the redfish tourny, and follow a couple of those boats. you are in a very good area.

or you can follow the resident redfish slayers, gator and wildlife!!!

this spot was given up years ago on this site so I don’t mind sharing it again, when you leave lucy creek, go across the river to the north and fish that bank, there are some shallow spots so be careful. If you see a float on the bank, fish it! Be patient, and when another boat is haulin $$s towards you and pulls up just late enough to wake the heck out of you, you will see redfish tails everywhere on the bank and know you are in the right spot.

Thanks for the info guys. Im hoping to get out a few times next week when im off and see what happens. Im gonna focus on just running alot to see if i can locate any fish like xxmadfirexx suggested. Thanks

Welcome to Lady’s Island. Good luck!

Well i made it out Friday afternoon. Had some really nice water, spent a few hours searching and fishing but not a single redfish. I came accross a few areas that looked perfect, and i was sure i would fine some fish, but got the big fat zero. I saw one nice red that i spooked. Didnt find any schools. Just curious if anyone else had any luck friday?

Saw plenty of fish but no eaters, Gulp, Fly, and double Mud Minnows on a jig were the baits. Fish were very skittish and the water was not clear so spotting them a good ways from the boat was tough.

Sorry to hear you didnt have any luck either.
Hmm… So possibly some of the great looking spots i found will produce fish. They may have just had lockjaw that day.

I’ll tell you this much. I too was perplexed by the fishing here. There are many locations that look great, oyster bars, entrances to feeder creeks etc. but when you fish them you can go a whole day and not catch a thing, while others post they caught over 30 fish the same day. Its location and tide cycle. You won’t see anyone on this board sharing they’re good spots because they have worked hard to find them. Some locations are best at out going mid tide, others incoming mid. It takes alot of time on the water to get a list of good spots and when to fish them. This place is definately not like the waters I fished in Florida growing up there. I hate to say this but pay attention to where you see others fish, they are there for a reason. If you ever see “Wildlife” or “Jig Head” out there…bird dog them:wink: …they know were the fish are all the time. I have been looking for them too!

We’ve been going down to Sam’s Point every fall for a few years now. We stay with some of the locals and have got a bunch of pointers from them (the guys at Beaufort Boat and Dock are fabulous too!!). We’ve marked a bunch of spots over the years but almost never have the same action in the same spot from year to year.

Probably one of the first areas we hit IF we can (the old jonboat IS a fair weather boat!) is exactly the area that Backlash was talking about. We’ve also got a few spots back in Lucy that are always places to check out but once again never say always! It just takes times, the right tide, the right bait and sometime the right luck to find 'em.

Last fall we almost couldn’t find a red the whole two weeks we were there but the trout and flounder fishing was more than enough to keep us on the water everyday that we could get out…until “Sandy” decided to start moving in

The north bank of the coosaw is your best bet. There are dozens of drops. Best bet is to explore dead low tide in stealth mode with a trolling.motor. You’ll see the fish move. Mark that spot and come back on rising or dropping tide. You may not catch em that day but they will be there or close by. Pretty soon they’ll be back eating muddies under a popping cork.
The one thing to look for is pockets of grass in shallow water. Throw right in the middle and work the artificial bait slow, but a popping cork aggressively till you find what they want today. Go Luck and keep askin for suggestions.

Thanks jighead

jighead,
When you refered to “pockets of grass in shallow water” were you talking about “seaweed” growing on the bottom?
Thanks for your comments.

CRick-don’t know about Jiggy but there are a couple of spots I look for that actually have some marshgrass growing up in a more open area. That’s an indication to me that there may be some structure that fish are holding around. Have had to really watch it in a couple of areas because the grass may get you in trouble too on an outgoing! Biggest flattie I caught last fall was right next to one of those open area grass tufts.

No Rick…what Jiggy is talking about are openings in the grass when it’s flooded. They can be large areas that go dry (or almost) at low tide and that hold fish. “Pockets” can also be a small opening in an otherwise regular, featureless bank. Often tossing a bait or lure into one of these small pockets can produce fish. Jiggy, G8rnsc and I have caught a dozen or more over the slot reds from one small “pocket” the size of a washtub. We named that one the “Dinner Plate” But there are many little pockets that produce…keep at it…you’ll find one or more yourself.

Good Luck!

Hit the water again today for about 4 hrs. Patience paid off. I finally found some fish. There were quite a few large schools , but i only picked up one 21"red. They were very spooky and didnt want to hit anything, but that was fine…i was just excited to find some fish!!! Ill be back to tear them up when the weather and tide is right.
Thanks again for the tips guys.

Wildlifesc, Dadfsr,
Thanks you for your responces to my question a few days earlier. I apprreciated your comments.

Fished the flats yesterday and today. Water was a little muddy but did find some fish. Saw more reds today than yesterday while fishing the same area. As I recall, I found most of the fish when the tide was still falling. They seemed to taper off once the tide turned. Had a real nice school today before the dolphin busted them up!
