New to Surf Fishing

Hey guys, just found your forum while trying to find tips for surf fishing charleston. My wife’s family lives on James Island and we’ll be coming down July 7th-14th to visit. We’ll be staying on Folly Beach. I’ve grown up fishing inland lakes and rivers, so saltwater fishing is pretty new to me. I thought surf fishing seemed like a good way to spend some evenings/nights. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for someone that has never done it. Not really looking to steal anyones secret spots, just wanting general info on rigging and what kind of structure to look for. I’m completely new to this, so any tips even basic would be very appreciated. Also, if anyone plans on going out during this week and wants to show two surf dummies how it’s done, would love to meet up and learn.
Thanks!
Dan

You can search various topics on this site, which will be very helpful. A 3ft PVC pipe in the sand to hold your rod rigged with a two drop rig with 1/0 circle hooks, fresh shrimp, thrown right in the suds where the waves break will usually produce. Have fun, good luck and post any more questions.

When fishing the breaks, how much weight do you need to keep the bait in there? I have a buddy that makes all kinds of Bank and pyramid sinkers up to 5oz. Want to come as prepared as possible.

It all depends upon the current that day. I would go as low as 1oz if you can, but 2-3oz would be typical for Folly where i usually fish. I buy the cheapest fresh shrimp at Crosby’s on the way to Folly. Fresh shrimp will catch most anything that swims in the surf. Good louck and don’t forget to post results good or bad.

Thanks! you know I will. Last question, is there any fish good or bad to eat? Do you guys normally keep what you catch?

Southern King fish, AKA Whiting is good eatin’

You can hook into anything with shrimp so I recommend you carry DNR’s fish limit charts (just print it off online).
