Guys
Thanks for all the info! I have a yeti mug and cooler so I guess I am ready to go.
I was more looking for general areas and not limited to the Cooper River. I don’t mind traveling with the boat to new landings and areas. I was pretty fortunate to have good red and speck teachers in Louisiana. It was a heck of an adjustment from rainbow and salmon fishing in Alaska, but we were able to do it.
Bonzo hopefully will hook me up and I hope to be able to meet you guys one day on the water.

Don’t underestimate the Cooper. I typically put in at Remley’s and fish the Wando and the Cooper and all of the smaller creeks that feed into both. We go over to IOP sometimes but not very often. Sure, we go exploring sometimes but not because we didn’t find fish in the Wando or Cooper. There’s a ton of good fishing to be had in and around that area.
That’s great to hear. I can put in at the house and run down there in less than an hour. I guess I just need to stop putting it off and go exploring. I have just heard mixed reviews from folks around here about the Wando and Cooper River is all. So I wasn’t sure if it was worth trying or not. The times we have gone was around IOP and we didn’t have a lot of success. I was trying the same tactics that we used in Louisiana so I guess I may have to adjust accordingly.
Some folks feel as though they own the water and have these “secret spots” they don’t want anyone around so they actually downplay any fish activity. I live in Lexington and I have yet to have a day on the Wando/Cooper that made me regret dragging the boat down to the coast. Granted, any time on the water is worth the drag but you get what I’m saying.
I haven’t been out since December so I don’t have any real time info for you. I do know guys are still catching reds pretty consistently but the trout report has been inconsistent at best. I’m not much on drowning bait. I throw artificials 99.999% of the time when I’m fishing in the salt. I grew up bass fishing so I apply a lot of the same techniques I use for bass when I go after reds, trout and flounder. Obviously the cold temps we’re experiencing is going to make things more difficult, even for the most seasoned fishermen amongst us.
Vudu shrimp under a popping cork is what we used and had the most success with the reds and tight lining double rigged plastic was our speck go to. Similar?
I’ve caught’em under popping corks but I prefer without. Plus, I like the Savage shrimp better. Lol!
This time of year (actually any time of year) I like a Trout Trick for my bottom bouncing presentations. I also like the Z Man EZ ShrimpZ (with its weighted hook). I’ll also use a DOA shrimp (with internal weight). I’m a huge fan of swimbaits and crankbaits (yes, just like bass fishing crankbaits…Strike King preferrably). I also like MirrOlure suspending jerkbaits and some of their topwater baits. I’ve caught a few on multi-bladed spinnerbaits. Obviously conditions dictate what I’m throwing. I never hit the water with pre-conceived notions.
If any of you midlanders want to come down and hit the water and don’t want to drag a boat down with you just let me know and we can go in mine. We can let Bangstick captain it.
