New to Yak Fishing - Looking for places to launch

I recently sold my boat and bought a couple of kayaks for the family to use. I have been fishing out of mine quite a bit, but I have not had a lot of luck in the small creek behind my neighborhood. I live on Johns Island near River and Maybank and am trying to get an idea of places that I can launch the kayak for 2-4 hour fishing trips. I’m not looking for anyone to tell me secret fishing spots, I just need ideas for float plans. When I had a boat, I fished the North Edisto all the time. Unfortunately, I can’t cover quite as much water now … Thanks in advance for any advise or help!

Folly Boat Ramp shouldn’t be too far away from you. As long as your kids are old enough to maneuver through some light boat traffic.

Thanks. Someone mentioned to me that you can pay $5 and launch from Mingo Point at Kiawah. Is that true?

I just put this Launch Sites app on my phone. It doesn’t have all the “secret” spots, but it might be helpful, and you can add to it as you find new places to launch.

Just downloaded it. Pretty cool app. It does indicate that the Kiawah bridge is a good launch spot.

Not sure, but you can launch at the bridge right up the creek. Limehouse and Bulow might be close. Limehouse is busy and Bulow is quiet and usually has some interesting characters hanging around. Cherry Point is busy, but safe for kayaking. Bowen’s Island for $2 or Crosby’s on Folly for $2.

Yes. I have been putting the yak in the creek behind the neighborhood. I love paddling in the creek, but I’m not finding many fish this year. I caught quite a few reds and trouts back there last year year just fishing from the bank. I think its time to broaden my horizons. Are you in that neighborhood? I know that there are several in here with kayaks.

Isn’t that Pennys Creek that leads to the Stono? I have been fishing the Stono near you in my yak, but have not had any luck at all.

Does anyone launch or has anyone put in under the cosgrove bridge?

I’ve launched at the Cosgrove bridge a couple times. Caught a few trout but always had better luck in the Mt P area. There is a lot of big boat traffic near cosgrove and the current can get strong. Not much structure around besides the big power poles out in the water.

I’ve heard of a spot on James Island at the end of Riley road. Haven’t been out there yet but from google maps it looks good. I wouldn’t mind checking out the ramp on Bulow-Landing rd on John’s Island.

I haven’t had much luck fishing around Cosgrove.

Cosgrove is a good after work location for me, figure I need to try it out. I always see people fishing on the bank there.

Riley Road looks rough, wouldn’t leave anything in my vehicle there.

I think I’m going to drive by there tomorrow and scope it out. I can’t really tell what the area looks like judging from google maps. I find it hard to believe that its a bad area when its on James Island but I guess its possible.

Mountainman1 - Yes. Penny Creek. I hooked what had to be a red a few weeks ago, but he broke the line when he ran under a tree that had fallen into the creek. I was fishing with gulp shrimp under a popping cork. After he broke off, I kept seeing the cork pop up at various locations around the creek. I chased him down and got my hands on the cork a couple of times, but I could not keep a good grip. My adrenaline was pumping as I was chasing him around the creek. My wife thought I was crazy.

I forgot about the Riley Rd. ramp. That is not a bad idea. It’s not far from the Folly Rd. bridge. I actually put a 17’ in there a few years ago when conducting a survey for a new dock on that part of the creek. That would probably be a good kayak launch area. It’s not the best neighborhood, but your car should be OK back there. Just don’t leave any valuables in the car to be safe.

That looks like great grass around Maybank highway. Have you gotten out in 6.0+ high tide? I have seen a bunch of tailers off the Stono, but sure haven’t figured out how to get them to bite. They don’t stay in one spot too long at all, so only getting a couple of casts off. I just had lunch at the St John Yacht club, pulling up in the yak. Unfortunately their menu is pretty limited, so probably won’t go back.

I have looked in the grass closer to Headquarters to the north of the bridge but not in the grass on south side closer to the mouth of the creek. I keep running out of time and/or daylight when I try to head to other side of the bridge. I need to plan a trip where I have more than 2 hours to fish. I hate paddling too far when my fishing windows are limited. I also want to spend some time in that creek on a low tide to figure out if there are some oyster bars that I am missing.

I still have not eaten at St. Johns Yacht Club. Maybe I never will …

2 hours should be enough, if you get it an hour before/after high tide. Of course, that doesn’t include the paddle time. I think for you, you’d be battling the current when the tide is outgoing. I’m fishing directly across from Headquarters on the West Ashley side, where 526 will be going thru. I don’t stray too far when the sun is going down.
