Hello all! I am a newbie. Bought a 32 foot cc and going offshore the last weekend in august. Trying to get some tips or pointers to where to look for dolphin/possible kings. Have the tackle purchased and some baits but any particular areas where the grass beds or floating weeds normally hang? Trying to take my 3 friends oht for our maioden voyage and catch some fish. Maybe some tips for some bottom fishing if we cant get any schoolers.
Man thats a big boat for a newbie! Just head 150 deg till you get to 200 ’ then slow and look for weed and flyers. Its not the best time of the year for dolphin, but the kings should be in close by then!
Wish you the best. You can do a lot of great fishing in a 32 CC. That’s a long run for a maiden voyage so I would suggest friends going who have experience or a buddy boat. My philosophy would be “will be taking boat out for first time last weekend in August and if I can get offshore it will be gravy” and be prepared to be satisfied cruising the Intracoastal Waterway if conditions aren’t close to perfect. That said I have caught my largest king mackerel ever inside the jetties of Charleston harbor over Labor Day weekend without a long offshore run. Good luck

Thank you guys. How far out is 200’ roughly? I am used to lower east coast of florida and 200 foot is like a mile out lol Yeah the boat was a really good deal and seemed the bigger the safer on the ocean! Do you fish kings the same way you fish for dolphin? Would you use steel leaders for kings or would the trollers with mono be ok?
Disclaimer: I’m far from an expert. I see you are posting on the Edisto page so I assume you are leaving out of North or South Edisto River. I will take my 27 CC to Edisto Banks on calm days and I believe I am in around 200 ft but that is 50+ miles out and that may not even get you to the Gulf Stream. I bought the chart that is something like Fish Hot Spots that has the areas listed and you can figure out depths and distances. Your post now makes much more sense knowing that you are used to the short Florida runs. I use wire leaders if I am fishing live bait on a treble hook over bottom structure. For trolling lures I have seen mono leader used. The king that I mentioned at the Charleston jetties was caught on a diving Rapala plug on a wire leader. That 32 will be a great boat for the type of fishing you do off SC coast.

Thank you Jghall. I appreciate it. We will drive around for a while looking for anything floating and maybe chum a little to see if we can get a school to scare up. Probably will end up fishing the wrecks and the Edisto 40 and possibly the 60. Roughly how far is the 60? They say a lot better fishing can be had out there due to it not being crushed by fisherman nonstop and potentially bigger fish.
32 ft is a huge boat until it gets ****ty out there then it feels like a bath tub
60 is right at 20 miles.
