SCDNR releasing hatchery raised flounder into estuaries | Myrtle Beach Sun News https://share.google/fLvzEfXqhtVRMVqMn
“The success of the release will be evaluated by assessing their contribution to the wild population when they reach one to two years old using SCDNR’s genetic-based identification tool, Twilley said.”
What does that mean? Where Bwang? Are these flounder genetically modified somehow?
Nope, that just means their parents are genotyped and therefore the offspring can be genetically detected by finding the unique sequences that the male and female contributed
23 and me for flatties
It’s what we’ve been doing with red drum for a couple decades, but the tools have only gotten stronger at detecting stuff
And FWIW, the responsible stocking approach that SCDNR is committed to following for any species we produce and stock requires that the genetic structure of the population never be modified by adding those fish, because we are using wild caught, native fish and ensuring the genetic structure of the population isn’t changed by adding to it over time as we detect the broodstock’s offspring in the wild
Isn’t that the same approach that the SCDNR has used for decades, in their Hybrid Bass re-stocking program?
I was told a while back, by a DNR Biologist, that there is a very limited, natural, spawn from the Greenwood dam, into Lake Murray, at certain times, depending on the flow rate of the Saluda River, producing Striper’s, and Hybrid Bass. But, they can differentiate those fish from their stocked fish.
I thought everyone knew that
Common knowledge of course!
I’m always learning new things from you guys smarter than me!
Time to turn off the lights and hang the no vacancy sign……
Very good
I’ll drink beer or beam
His oldest boy Caleb could out fish most grown men when he was a young teenager, me included lol.
we fished a lot at Edisto back about the time we both showed up down there, just before chatterbait went with zman but when they were only available on eBay. If you could find one back then youd never sell it, they were gold.
I remember loosing one one day on an oyster rake and went wading up to my waist to get that sucker back, good times.
I hope Raddaddy shows back up, I’ll send him this link.
let’s listen in…
