I teamed up with Mr. Parker and his wife to see if we could round up a fish or two Saturday. We started our day looking to get some fresh mullet in the cast net, in an impoundment. After a few casts we had enough bait to begin our day. From there we headed to our spot and were planning on fishing a few hours before low, and fishing a few after. Upon arrival we set up and began fishing. Mr. Parker got on the board within 30 seconds putting up the first red, with his first cast. He literally dropped bait directly in front of him in a trough, no more than 3 feet away, pretty cool:smiley: We kept at and his “quick red” was not a sign of what was in store for our day. The reds were few and far in between. I don’t know what it was, but they were not out that day. We had a recent full moon, a bunch of rain, huge tides and NE winds. We did our best and worked hard. I think I’m getting spoiled and expect to much, to often. Regardless of only getting three reds for the day, we had a great time. The weather was great, windy and not hot. The company was first rate. The beach was beautiful, the surf was pounding, and the salt was licking our face. Cracker Larry’s recent post has helped me put things into perspective, what is a “nice day.” I’d say our day was a nice one. All in all A couple lady fish, a couple of ray’s, a couple of sharks, a couple whiting, David tore up the black drum, and I had success putting up a mess of nice blues. David also caught a fish that looked like a pompano, not sure on the name. No “representative” fish here. They may not be 50 inches, but they wiggle when you poke um As always I’m grateful to be a part of this forum, and thankful to learn from those who know more than I. God bless and good luck out there folks.
Cut mullet Mr. Jarvis. You better get on out there. Within a couple of weeks offers the best opportunity for reds for the season. They call it red October. Shrimp has been doing well too, thank you:smiley:

Palometta [:I] Thanks David:smiley:
Hello Runbabyrun when you mentioned red october it reminds me of the movie “The Hunt for Red October” How do you setup your gear? Never caught any Reds yet and that’s my goal when I get back to surf. I just use carolina rig
Jarvis the set up I use is a 9ft medium heavy rod, a 6000 size reel, spooled with 30lb braid, then 50 feet of 30 lb mono tied together with an albright knot. Then a Carolina rig with 50 lb mono liter. A number 2-5 owner circle hook. Three to five ounce pyramid sinkers. For bait the reds will hit most any cut fish that you catch on the beach. ( I don’t use sharks, rays other reds or black drum.) Mostly blues and whiting. Cut shrimp is doing very well and cut mullet, use fresh if possible. A basic rule of thumb is target from Labor day to Thanksgiving. They can come a little earlier or stay a few weeks later. Find pot holes of water on the beach, troughs of water and cast into them when water comes in and fills them up. Review Rich Trox videos online and they are beneficial. I’ve got a few books on surf fishing I’ve read and your welcome to them, let me know if you want them. Study the forum search history. Every year I look back a few months in advance and know what to target, when to target, and refresh how to target. Fish often. Good luck Jarvis:smiley:
