Night Fishing Trout

Did some night fishing off a dock near the Stono. Ended the night with 5 trout, couple ugly mudfish and a ton of stingrays that we could not avoid hooking up on. Everything caught on naked mud minows and naked DOA shrimp.

never heard of trout fishing at night, did you use spotlights or fish in the dark?

I was fishing in the dark without lights. Clear skys and bright out though…I actually was not expecting to catch any trout, thinking I would only hook up on a red.

Trout fishing at night is some of the best

High Tide w/ 50 Yamaha

nice, gonna give it a try

Just picked up new batteries and i will start night fishing off my dock next week.I drop two 4 foot green lights in and sit back and wait for the bait to come in.I then fish lighted red plastic corks with live bait. The action can be fast and hard.Feel free to drop in and fish no problem.

If you keep the lights on everynight, it should get the bait use to hanging out in that spot, which will turn into a nice fishing spot time after time. What have you been catching off your dock? Reds, trout and flounder? any sharks?

Not AC lights.

Yeah, I guess the battery bill would start racking up quick! What kind of light did you get exactly, something similar to a swordfish light stick?

You could mount a solar charger somewhere close to batteries.

I lived on the Texas coast for 13 years. Every summer we would take the generator and one of the big locomotive headlights and set up near a pass or jetty. We would catch trout for hours on jigs as long as the tide was moving.
I could see that type of set-up working around Breech or any of the cuts where there is a good water flow.

Too many fish, Too little time!

Daemon, you beat me to it. I grew up on the TX coast, and by far the most productive way of catching specks was under the lights at night. Way back before there were limits and before releasing a legal-sized fish was ever heard of, it was not unusual to catch 2 48qt coolers full of fish on a fall night with 2-3 guys fishing. Guys would actually put down their rods and let their arms rest for a while. Throwing a double speck rig, it wasn’t that unusual to reel in two fish at a time.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

I experienced trout being attracted to lights o/a late March 1985 or 6 on the Springmaid Pier at Myrtle Beach on a warm, drizzly night. Nearly every cast of a grub produced a very small, 9 or 10-inch speck.

Do you just anchor and hang the light over the side of the boat? Do you want it several feet away from the boat?

Check these out on google. They can be submerged or floated on top. Make sure to read the reviews…I saw that a lot of the cheap lights leak water.

We would actually drive to the spot we wanted to fish. There were several spots on the upper Texas coast where you could literally sit in the back of your truck and cast into the channel. Not to mention that you could also drive on the beach and set-up for fishing the surf with the big lights. We never had to fish farther than a 100’ extension cord from the vehicle.

I’ve been thinking about doing something like this. Does the tide matter much at all or is the fact that the bait fish are hanging out by the light good enough?
