Night fishing

Anyone have any suggestions to do some night fishing? A buddy of mine’s schedule never works out with mine so we decided to try to do some fishing at night.

Not really wanting to tackle the surf at night. Any advice or suggestions would be great.

The surf is pretty easy at night that is when i fish the surf so that i don’t have to deal with the crowds. I normally fish the weekends but i am off til the 27th so hit me up any time til then or on a weekend and as long as i don’t have other plans I’ll be there.

I do allot of night fishing so I think I can be of some help, its easy. Lighting is important,my primary source is a powerful headlamp. Ive used the black diamond storm for a couple seasons and its held up great, its strong and water resistant, but any headlamp will work, just find one with some power. My second source of light is a battery operated stern light for a boat some come with attachment poles or you can duck tape or zip tie one to a pole or stick yourself. I then put pole into rod holder on surf cart and it lights up whole surf cart so you can see tackle, rod tips etc., it works great and is also water resistant or attach whatever flash light you have on hand. If not using a cart you can just stick in sand next your back pack or bag and have light there. I also like to head out before it gets too dark to get set up , rig poles, find good spot with sand bars and troughs, dont just sling bait anywhere, so very important to target the troughs, see videos on line to help identify. Its easier to find these at low tide, there just holes, drop offs changes in structure on beach. Organization is a big part of keeping things running smooth. Know where everything is, keep it easily accessible, you wouldnt want a fish to die on you while hunting for pliers or a camera-work your set up-dont let your set up work you. Stay on top of it, make sure your drags not too tight also, it would suck to loose your favorite pole because you and your buddy were shot gunning miller lights and having a jersy mikes sub, have fun, its supposed to be fun. If you dont like miller light there is nothing wrong with a caprice sun or a fresca.

Thanks bigcountryboy. I’ll be sure to hit you up sometime. We were going to go this weekend, but I am not nearly prepared like I need to be for a night trip.

Thanks runbabyrun. It’s not my first rodeo, but definitely my first at night in the surf. Good advice, especially on drag. I almost lost one of my poles that way before.

Good to see when someone simply says thanks I appreciate it. I have an obligation to give back to the sight that has given me so much call it karma or appreciation whatever hope there was something in there you can use Im sure allot of it you already knew. I pick up tips all the time from some of the folks on here and if I want to continue to take ,I need to give a little in return thats how system works or should work.Im heading out sat for a trip maybe Ill get lucky, but not sure with all the rain, thanks for sharing obsessed fisherman.

Have almost always landed our biggest sharks at night. Ofcourse, we tried to do the smart thing and fish for them after all the swimmers and no-nothings had left the beach. No need to attract the wrong popularity and have sharking banned from the beach as it was up on the northern beaches. Plus I just think it’s more exciting fishing at night. We did land a 41" Red Drum on the beach in the St. Helena sound one night about 1230 while sharking. We had a small bait out on a heaver and thought we had a lemon on… big surprise when Mr. Drum showed up.
