No Boat No Problem

While many people in our area love to fish, owning a boat is not always an option. At least once a month, someone on our message boards will ask for advice about some areas to fish from the land and while we are getting more options in the way of fishing piers, the number of spots seems to be dwindling as the Charleston area grows and more development takes place.

The good news for our land based anglers is that the Fall months are some of the best surf fishing that the Lowcountry has to offer. As water temperatures begin to cool off the fish in the surf become more active. Couple this with the mullet run we get this time of year and you have the recipe for some great fishing conditions. The crowds at the beach tend to drop off right after Labor Day so getting to the beach is not the daunting task that it was during the Summer months and you will have many more options and space to set up your gear and try your luck.

A variety of baits will work well in the surf. Shrimp, mullet and other small fish work very well and many people will use shrimp to catch smaller fish and cut them up for fresh bait. I would recommend bringing a cast net with you to the beach as many times you can find all of the bait you need in the gullies and right there in the surf.
