I fished from about 3-5:45 today at Lighthouse inlet while the tide was coming in. Tide was still pretty low when I left though. I used live shrimp hooked through the tail and a ten foot surf rod. Didn’t get a single strike. I’ve had pretty good luck surf fishing in Florida in the Gulf, but I can’t seem to catch much around Charleston.
Does anyone have any pointers for me? Is it just a slow time of year? I thought winter was a good time to catch big reds.
Do you mean the light house off folly beach ?
The big reds most of them have gone off shore unfortunately
It is however a great time to fish for trout! Put those live shrimp on a float with a couple feet of line and your in business!
Going to be VERY SLOW from the shore right now. You could fish for days and not catch any quality fish. Your best bet is a 2 hook bottom rig for some whiting. Most of the reds are schooled up and the best access to them is by boat.

Yeah, surf temp is staying under 50 degs. pretty much all day. You may catch some rays if you can get ouside the second sandbar. Any cut bait is okay. Any other fish wil be very few and far between. The inshore guys are having some good days right now. Warmer water will be the key. Goog luck!
Thanks for the help! I didn’t realize the winter was that much slower, good to know. When does the surf fishing usually pick up?
I started catching Pompano at Folly in mid-April last year. Unless it’s particularly cold, I’m planning to head back out at the end of March this year.
Water temp will botom out in the surf around late Feb. I will start hittin’ it again around the second week of March. The big “breeder” Whiting wil start to move back into the surf as temp rises, April-May is the best time to target the biggest Whiting. On a decent trip you “could” fill a five gallon bucket with 1.5-2 lb. knot heads. MAN! I am already sick of the cold!
if you really wanna catch stuff regardless of what it is i always caught rays and spiny dogfish sharks at folly pier this time of year. cut mullet and or fresh cut squid you cant go wrong. usually more of the typical surf fish will start to show up once the water temp hits about 60 again. anything in particular youre after or just out to have fun?
Sounds good! I’m ready for March. I’m up to catch anything, but anything that’s good to cook or a good fight is what I’m shooting for. Reds, pompano, flounder, trout.
