Just got the email from NMFS. No red snapper season in the South Atlantic in 2016. Pretty amazing.

Wow. I totally saw that one going the other way this year… I saw more than 100 of them on my first dive on Saturday.
Me too! The problem is, the rule makers don’t dive and fish.

Sorry to hear this and thanks for sharing the update
Red snapper will remain closed in South Atlantic Federal waters in 2016. There will not be commercial or recreational seasons in 2016 because the total number of red snapper removed from the population in 2015 exceeded the allowable level.
In 2013, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council developed, and NOAA Fisheries implemented, a standardized process that specifies harvest may only occur in a given year if total removals (landings plus dead discards) in the previous year were less than the number allowed for population rebuilding. The total removals allowable for 2015 were 114,000 fish. After evaluating landings and discard information for 2015, NOAA Fisheries has determined the estimates of total removals were 276,729 fish; therefore, the fishery remains closed in 2016.
The process will be repeated in 2017 to determine if there will be a season in South Atlantic Federal waters in 2017. </font id=“black”>

There won’t be any red snapper in 2017 either.

Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

I quit going 20 years ago. Used to go to every one. Every one was useless. They listened to what we said and did what they wanted to do. They only let us in to feel like we had an input. Sort of like voting for president.

And just think - they’re not even counting the millions of ARS that live in the MPA’s. At some point we need to take our fishery back!
They said over 200,000 reds were taken in 2015 with no open season. That means their calculated take was based on mortality of released fish. They do not have data to support this ludicrous claim. Stop reporting any catches of red snapper. The pin heads don’t have enough sense to scratch their own arse.

typical government response
we realize that the data that we have is not accurate, but it is the only data we have so we will use it to make our policy recommendations
by the way, this mentality goes on with your medical care and medicare policies as well, it is plain scary

Amen.

Forgive my ignorance on the subject, but are they saying that 276,000 fish were killed/taken in 2015, but there was absolutely no commercial or recreational season at all?
So the assumption is that all 276,000 fish were all either killed as a result of commercial boats’ bycatch, or after being released by recreational anglers?
