Red snapper will remain closed in South Atlantic Federal waters in 2015. There will not be commercial or recreational seasons in 2015 because the total number of red snapper removed from the population in 2014 exceeded the allowable level.
In 2013, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council developed, and NOAA Fisheries implemented, a standardized process that specifies harvest may only occur in a given year if total removals (landings plus dead discards) in the previous year were less than the number allowed for population rebuilding. The total removals allowable for 2014 were 106,000 fish. After evaluating landings and discard information for 2014, NOAA Fisheries has determined the estimates of total removals were 205,859 fish; therefore, the fishery remains closed in 2015.
The process will be repeated in 2016 to determine if there will be a season in South Atlantic Federal waters in 2016. The next assessment of the South Atlantic red snapper population is scheduled to be completed in 2016 and allowable harvest may change as a result of the population assessment.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

The most horrible thing is that the reason they are releasing is that the numbers are so, because either a) “there is uncertainty in the MRIP data”, or b) There is a good year class coming through…
In layman’s terms, they are saying either their data is unreliable (net neutral), or there was a great spawn last year (actually good!)…
OK,since the passive route isn’t working do ya think a clucking boat caravan to the clucking capital would get Haley to do SOMETHING!!!
Don’t give me the same old BS crap about how showing our ass won’t work.Raise a little hell like the liberals, clog the streets of Columbia and some (**() body is gonna listen…

This guy gets it , The squeaky wheel gets the grease !
Our Capitol’s done all it can. Goldfinch and Campsen have both done all they could.
This is a Federal issue, and our state is not going to secede over it.
The SAFMC and NOAA are not really accountable to anyone but the Secretary of Commerce and the President.
Congress can take away their money, and they’ll just take more out of assessments and keep pushing catch shares.
Don’t you get that the name of the game is to get us all to accept privatization of these fish so that a few big commercial interests can make more money hand over fist at the market and the government can make money from the artificial market instead of going before Congress and begging every year?
Meanwhile, I will say this one more time if I have said it on here 10,000 times. There is a group of recreational fishermen who cut their noses off to spite their faces the last round of Magnuson reauthorization so they could put commercial fishermen out of business. They forced 10 year rebuilding timeframes based on “best available science,” which is code for whatever the heck you want to use to support your agenda, whether its been peer reviewed independently or whether its been repeated and tested. It’s best available, and you can use it to ruin communities and hobbies and businesses.
Hopefully these same people who were foolish back then are not getting involved again right now as MSA is being reauthorized and hopefully fixed to avoid these debacles.
It really is not hard to understand how we got here if you simply follow the money.
SA FMC and NOAA turning regular citizens and fisherman into criminals with bull**** fish stock numbers. Anybody who thinks red snapper numbers are bad needs to go drop alive bait 120’ .

Phin you are correct its not about the fish , but why does the govt get to take away a resource they have no sense getting involved in using false/incorrect data or social media as its stated in another thread regarding this topic to make money off of . How did this get out of the hands of local govt ? One would think that since every fishery is different from areas to accessibility to you name it that the local biologist and local govt should be regulating and monitoring something like this . Maybe I’m understanding this wrong but doesn’t the govt already have a bunch of much easier ways to screw us over without having to use a fish to do that ? Pardon my ignorance on this subject I might my personal feelings and beliefs to much involved on this one .

So do all the clowns in Washington and Columbia but do they listen to us? THAT is the problem with government. A select few think they know what is best for the rest of us and they seldom get it right. And the left wants MORE government.

The state could open a state season, and only check fisherman in state waters. That’s what’s happening in the gulf. There are so few fed boats everyone knows when they are around. There are states thumbing their noses at federal Pot laws. This would be similar.
