Too windy to see any fish today. Seems like it started right when the tide was coming on the flat…never fails. On the way to the flat,however, I saw a huge object go airborne to the right of me . I stopped to see what it was…and sure enough a huge thing with a u-shaped head comes out of the water completely…and splashed back down. No doubt a manta ray. First time seeing one in person.
We had one breach right next to us last year as we were running down the ICW. It was awesome but kind of scary. It was less that 10’ from the baot and was about 6 - 8’ wide. It would have done some serious damage if it had hit us.
Wow. Yeah, I couldn’t help but think of one jumping up in front of me as I was driving, like it was scared and trying to get out of the way…it would rip the center console off the boat and knock me out too…this thing was bigger than my skiff…biggest thing I’ve ever seen in the ocean…I had goosebumps.
I have seen mantas several times in our local waters jumping and even doing back flips. They are incredible creatures. It was crazy, scary and sad when we hit one last week coming in from offshore.
