North Edisto, Botany, Deveaux Bank

Can someone give me an overview of this area? We normally put in at Live Oak, and head over toward Otter Is and the Sound. Thinking about exploring a little out through the North Edisto for a change of pace. Put in at Steamboat and maybe out to the little bank just off hte mouth of the river. It looks like a nice deep channel. If I turn south just out of the mouth what kind of water is that?

jacob298 Get a chart. Google Earth will help you. There is a big flat on the N Edisto on the right going out. If in doubt, idle. After you come out of Steamboat Ck and take right stay in the middle, cheat a little to the left (north) and you’ll be okay. Bob

thanks Bob. is it safe to say the north edisto is easier than the sound, in terms of shallows?

If I may throw my 2 cents in - I think so. The sound can get tricky with the shallow spots out in the middle. The N. Edisto does have some flats, but it’s not too tricky if you just go with the markers and watch your depth monitor. Also, if you go out to the Deveaux Bank in the mouth of the N Edisto, watch out for a sandbar that extends from the Bank/island over toward Edisto. It does not extend all the way over (maybe halfway or so?), and it’s plenty deep off the beach on Edisto right there, but it can get pretty shallow near the Bank. You’ll see the breakers, depending on the tide. Just watch your depth finder, watch for the breakers on the sand bar, and you should be OK out there.

If you want to approach the Bank, you can either approach it straight on from the mouth (watching for the sandbar that will likely extend off the Bank to your right toward Edisto), or you can follow the beach on Edisto around (there is a channel between Edisto and the Bank that drops to 25 feet or so - with a ripping current), and approach from the south side of the bank. However, it gets pretty shallow on the south side of the Bank (if I remember correctly), so I’d probably approach from straight out of the mouth of the North Edisto.

If you beach your boat on the Bank, just be sure that you don’t venture beyond the signs marking the high-water line. The Bank/island is a bird sactuary or something, and you can’t go past those markers.

If you venture down the south side of the Bank, it’s not too dangerous as far as depth goes…as long as you keep your distance from the Bank. Depending on tide, it’s about 8-12 feet deep there. I’ve never been much beyond (to the east of) the Dev

Great information… thanks very much
