If I’m the President of NW, I would have a press conference and make it obvious that I would revoke all football scholarships and permit all transfer request.
Since they are still under NCAA football rules, they would have to sit out a year if transfer to D1.
Were I a coach of a group of players like that, I’d pull every single scholarship and head over to the intramural fields for open tryouts. Not one of those kids would ever see the field at my school again.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

This will be yet another example of union ruination. I have no problem paying athletes a stipend but, no one forces them to take a scholarships and engage in athletics at a college. Many of them do so with dreams of a high paying pro career, others in order to get a free education. Whatever their motivation, they do so willingly. I heard someone on the radio yesterday say, “Scholarships are the only way many of these inner-city kids could ever go to college”. I say B.S… There are ways to go to college if the desire is there. Grants, student loans and GASP!, the military. I have a nephew. His father simply did not have the money to pay for college. He did not want to accrue a large student loan debt so he joined the Army 2 years ago. They are paying for his undergrad degree and he will have money after the fact to pay for grad school. Unions will ruin college athletics.

This will wind up in the supreme court before all is said and done. Hopefully it never comes to fruition. This will ruin college football if it is allowed to happen.
If they start paying players, how long until the NFL just does what MLB has done and starts farm teams? If that happens, CFB is going to be ****.

It would be fine with me if it’s the end of college sports. Open some seats for kids who want to be there. It’s the doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers, etc that actually contribute to society, not the camera hounding chest thumpers.

Maybe that’s why you aren’t the university president. NW football apparently brought in over 235 million since 2003. So yeah, they could cut off their nose to spite their face or admit that this notion of a student-athlete is a complete farce perpetuated solely for the purpose of keeping as much revenue as possible in the hands of adminstrators and universities.
7,
Getting rid of college sports would not open more seats. It would probably greatly shrink the seats. The money those sports bring in is huge. But it also brings in students. My kid wants to go to USC because we are fans.
Sirspear,
Yep. student-athlete = money for the school…not sure what are you saying here?

Right, point is, NW needs those guys to make money. You can talk a bunch of rubbish about replacing them, but there is a reason Bama makes big time money on football and Presbyterian/coastal/wofford et al do not. You have to put a quality product out if you want to make money, and the days of hoarding those profits and cutting the players out is ending. The skill of the players is what brings in the bucks, and they are rightfully demanding a seat at the table.

One quick reference. Search “college athletics revenue vs expences”.
But if quality of the product creates a negative effect. It will be dropped.
If they want to be paid. then remove the scholarship and see what happens. Remember if a years worth of scholarship is worth $30k. That is FREE money. If the school pays the player $30k, they have to claim it as income and pay taxes on it. Resulting in not enough money to pay for school.
1 more thing to think about. Let assume NW pays there players $70k a year. Thats fine. but that will make them in violation with NCAA rules, thus making the unable to play. No matter what a judge says, no matter what a school says, they are still under NCAA rule…for now

Search revenues vs football/basketball expenses for d1 FBS schools. Just because a school CHOOSES to spend profits on golf, swimming, track doesn’t mean it makes sense to lump those expenses together.

So if a business has a dept that makes money, you can ignore the depts that lose when book keeping?

Schools are only in two athletic businesses. Every other thing they spend money on is discretionary. Allocating swimming expenses against football revenue is as stupid as saying fishing expenditures should offset my paycheck.
FBS football and men’s basketball. Some schools operate men’s baseball (USC) and women’s basketball (Tenn) at a small profit, but those two sports account for well almost 100% of athletic revenue at schools in a power conference.
I’m not opposed to abolishing college sports altogether. Just license the rights to use the gamecocks intellectual property to an affiliated minor league team and take all those royalties and actually spend them on education. We keep college football and the school profits.
At the end of the day, the losers here will probably be athletes in non-revenue generating sports. Frankly, I couldn’t care less. Universities should see athletics for what it is, a way to make money for their actual purpose – education. Think if we had dumped all the profits for the last decade into the endowment rather than blow it on minor sports. That’s the real question – if football is making 40 mil a year in profit for USC, why is that money being spent on the swim team when the endowment is the second lowest in the SEC? It’s a public university. What would benefit South Carolina more, having a top ranked state school or giving scholarships to golf players? Seems like an easy answer to me.

Exactly. Now, get rid of womens athletics. Lets see how that works for you.

I said ALL athletics. If someone is willing to license the schools IP/facilities to run a minor league team, great. That private org can hire coaches, negotiate with players, advertise etc. University does nothing but collect a check.
