Not fished!

Seems the only Saltwater Stripers caught are by accident. They are here but as far as I can tell not a target Species.Years ago I caught them under Rantowels bridge in good numbers also Drayton Trussel and Horlbeck Creek. They are also in Wallace Creek.I just stopped fishing for them and never thought about it.Maybe We can get several of us to get the sport up again.I went to a Striper meeting about 4 years ago in North Chuck and 2 guys showed up.Anyone want to get together have lots of Info and good spots to go.Just cant say if the fish are in yet. They should be right now under Rantowels Bridge.Mail Me maybe We can get some guys together and go.I will set up a meeting if anyone is interested.

Stonoman,

I grew up on the Pamlico Sound in NC. We ate, slep, and breathed striper fishing in late fall , winter ,and early spring. However, ever since I moved here this is one of the few times I have heard someone ask about local Striper fishing. I know the Santee is awsome grounds for Striper but thats the only place I have really heard anything about. Where is Rantowels bridge? I’d be interested in going although I don’t have any spots just info on how and where we tipicaly caught them in NC. I would love to go and exercise some of my old techniques sometime and see if they work here?

Stonoman - I love to Striper fish as well. I live in Florence now but grew up in Jacksonboro fishing the Edisto. The fishing had deteriorated over the past years but I have heard some people starting to catch fish again. I do most of my fishing now in Lake Marion and the Santee river above Lake Marion. The spring Striper run there is a lot of fun - should be starting very soon. Some friends and I are going to Roanoke Rapids NC in April to Striper fish. They have a phenominal run there in the Spring. It is like nothing that I have ever seen before.

Good Luck

Rock,

That striper run in Roanoke Rapids is awsome! We use to make that trip twice a year and camp out for the weekend. It really started getting packed there the last couple of years so we migrated down to my home town Williamston NC about 30 miles down the road and would ride up the Roanoke and drift down using frozen or live (if you can find um) herring. (Small/Medium size brim work just as good too) We would kill them. Never caught any of the big hogs just plenty of 5-15 lbers. To me the further you get towards the mouth of the river and the sound the bigger the fish!

FYI:They have built a bunch of dock islands on the river now and you can start in Roanoke Rapids float down the river, fish, and camp out on these big square docks. Its a great family gig. Its been getting real popular in the late summer.

Been striper/ Blues fishing in new england since 92(both shore and boat). Enjoying my first year down hear in charleston SC. Anyone wants to hunt these stripy things I’m in!

Stono,
I would love to find out how and where to catch some stripers, especially on the fly. Please let me know if you put something together.

I’m especially interested to see if any Lake Murray techniques will work along the coast since there is always the chance an offshore trip will be “blown out” after I have already pulled the boat to the coast. Who knows, it could turn a bad trip into a good trip.

From the posts so far, it looks like we are all going to have to try different methods and places, and hopefully all of us will share the results. I troll umbrellas in Lake Murray, so I will be looking for water that is 20’ deep or deeper with structure.

The stripers gorge themselves on mayflies in late May-early June in the Santee. Give Stevie Pack (Packs Landing)a visit, buy him a couple beers and he will probably clue you in. It’s kinda neat to see a 4lb fish with a ball of mayflies ~1lb in its gut.

I have camped out there on the rantowles/intercoastal island 3 time in the last 4 monthes. There is room for a 4-7 boats. We could do a good deed and try for some stipers up rantowles and get drunk on the island but also pick up some trash. (just a thought) Might could make some new member to the Stonofishclub.

Whaler Driver,
What are you doing next Friday? Why don’t we plan on trying a little fly fishing on Rantowles. The boss may even let me skip out a little early, when he finds out you will be fishing. I will check the tides and get back to you later in the week.

Are the stripers like the rest of the fish in the area? Do they turn “on” when the tide is falling? If I chase them on the fly, what pattern works best? Do I need to fish them with a sinking line or not? What size fly works the best?

Richard, sounds good. Sure would be good to use the long rod again. Let’s touch base next week.

Thanks for the invite.

Soup,

I used to fish for stripers & lg cats in "Upper Santee "out of Lowfall landing on the O-Burg side. I believe that’s just across the river/swamp from Pack’s?GREAT fishing during April & first 1/2 of May. I’ve seen 'em eating mayflies, too. The young of year shad run there can be good, too. One cast & 500 or so shad. Bait for days.

“Frankly scallop, I don’t give a clam.”

Who has actually caught a striper around charleston other than the santee water system? Like the ICW, harbor, Folly, Stono,IOP and so on. If people are catching them, they are not posting about it. Is the fishing technique that different for Stripers? Seems like maybe they prefer a low salinity brackish water. No clue , never have caught one.

Let’s go fishing!

There is a picture of a 20 something pound striper a guy caught on an electric chicken at the MI jetties on the board at Inlet Convienience. No sh*t. I hear they are cauht regularly at the Georgetown jetties.

Jc1, I have caught a few by accident in the lower Cooper within sight of the bridge.

Like I said I stopped fishing for Stripers about 15 years ago. used to go under Rantowles Bridge and catch them on a 1-2 oz white butterbean.I caught a maybe 8 pounder off my dock in 1995 or so.I was catching trout on a pink and white grub the Striper hit.I was shocked but then realized my creek( Log Bridge) goes under the highway and back to Wallace creek. On the falling tide look at the water and you will see bait jumping in the flow.hey look like small threads? The Stripers always hit on the rising tide.On low tide you need boots and its very slippery under the bridge.I think fresh cut mullet would work right now.I tried anchoring and fishing several times but it never worked.I drive by and always check for the jumping bait so far i see none.Thats does not mean the stripers are not under the bridge.Mail Me and I can met you guys and show you the spot.I dont climb down rocks very good.

stono, I met you on the stono(oddly enough) about a year ago or so and talked briefly about the club but never followed up.Would like some info if you feel like shooting me an e-mail.I haved fished rantowles a few times with poor results.Do you fish the tide change? It seems that the current makes that spot difficult to fish when its running.I have ,however, caught 4 sripers over last two years, all in the wando river while fishing for reds and trout. The most recent was a 21" fish in beresford creek about a month ago.The only other salt(or salt-brackish)place that I have visually witnessed a good run of stripers was this time of year ,salt side of bushy park at and under the dentyens docks and barges.I would be interested in seeing how and where you fish the bridge and trying it again. When not at work ,I am always up for wetting a line.My wife thinks I need therapy…Fishing is therapy!I just started at Ross marine and am already scoping out where to fish at lunch.:sunglasses: LIFE’S SHORT…FISH HARD!!!

stono, actually I first talked to you around drum island while I was fishing for jacks with my wife and a few friends.Anyway I just recalled a conversation I had a few weeks ago with a guy I met at a local watering hole in which he let on that he had recently had a good day with stripers by jigging white bucktails at the cooper river bridge on the town creek side. Most of the fish going 18 to 24".I believe he said he caught 12 and had other trips similar in the last two months.Don’t know if there is any truth to it.Just something to consider. He seemed to know what he was talking about. Then again he might just be a drunken B.S. artist.Either way…

Fishguts I remember that. The SRFC is a great club. Not because I started it but because We have some really great people fishing with us.Yesterdays Redfish Tournament was fun but most of us were skunked.I still dont know who won I went home with head hanging low.LOL No pushes no fish for 8 hard hours and many casts. If fresh Crab chunks dont work they ain’t hungry.LOL Shoot me a mail and lets chase Stripers under Rantowles bridge.
