Started in the broad river looking for cobia fining, but since the water was smooth we decided to keep on going out and didnt stop till we hit the Beaufort 45. Have to tell you that it was the smoothest ride I may have ever taken off shore. We were able to cruise at about 32mph all the way out. Then dropped anchor and the catch was on.
Caught 6 spades 3 were, on light tackle and I have to say it was a challenge but after about a 20min fight they were in the fish box. As always black sea bass were abundant bringing them up 2 at a time. We caught about 20 or 25 but 6 were legal size.
The ride back in was a lot rougher but slicked down once we were back in the broad. Once were near the landing we decided to look around and caught a few lady fish and finished off the day with a cobia. Although the cobia was under size it was a great way to end a amazing day on the water.
man how do those spades taste? In Palm Beach where i’m from those things are all over the reefs in like 20-30 feet of water and we just dive past them and shoot the snappers and hogfish.
Spades are supposed to be very good. Never eaten one since I do not care for seafood (odd, like fishing but dislike seafood), but everyone I know that has eaten spades rave about the meat.
Had them last year, I have now nicknamed them Boneless Skinless Chickenfish. This is due to the flavor and texture unlike any fish I have ever eaten before. RADDADDY caught a few and gave me me some last year, more difficult to filet than other fish but well worth the time.
Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

Well Coosaw, Although I appreciate you looking out for me we decided to cook them up anyway… There was about 20 lb of filets and we decided to stuff them with a crabmeat blend and cover them with a cheese sauce… that, with veggies and rice was a delicious meal
