Yes Fred, you are right. I’m not wrong because of my nature. And that nature is to do a lot of research/homework before I get into a debate like this.
So your research has pinpointed Florida’s poor bottom fishing to lack of Secrecy? Come on. How does one research Secret spots being given out?
You didn't read anything I wrote, did you?
of course I did. You stated that giving out secret numbers lead to the demise of Florida’s bottom fishing, and also will lead to S.C. demise. I don’t believe that giving “secret” numbers will ruin our off shore fishing and you do. What did I miss?
You stated that you use research for all your posts… Right? What research can even measure “secret” spots being given to all as the supposed demise of S.C. fishery? You stated that giving secret spots has ruined South Florida’s fishery. I stated that I believe that easy assess and an over abundance of people fishing with easy access has caused Florida’s Bottom fishing problems.

Apparently you missed quite a bit. That's not what I said. That's your straw man creeping in again. Again, secrecy is only ONE variable of "ACCESSIBILITY". Accessibility is what caused the demise of SF.

I didn't say anything about the act of one man giving another man "secret spots". This post is about a mapping chip that makes large swaths of the ocean floor visible. Thank God it's incomplete for SC, and thank God it's more money than most people are willing to spend.
Again, Google “Steinhatchee” and “Suwannee”. This is scientific study on “secrecy”. Let me spell it out for you again. HUNDREDS of PUBLIC spots versus HUNDREDS of SECRET SPOTS. Secret spots have larger and more fish.
Don’t fight me on this. It’s really common sense. If you give out all of your fishing spots to hundreds of people, lot’s of people will fish them and they won’t be as good. Are you arguing against this basic truism?

As a former partyboat owner/operator in New Jersey, I can tell you one of the reasons I moved here in retirement was based on the fact that you could find fish by reading your depth recorder in a “likely” area. Fishing wrecks and live bottom for 40 years taught me how to use my machine to my advantage. There will be people who use cmor to their advantage and there will still be some who will need someone else to run their boat to find fish.
Bottom line is, this will put more people in the area and many of them will catch fish they never dreamed of.

EXACTLY! More pressure on the fishery.
Whether people believe that added pressure will have a net effect is subject to debate, but it more people in the right areas, catching more fish, is pressure, plain and simple.
Id like the gps numbers for the prominent floor topographic features to load into my Garmin. Since CMOR maps don’t work with Garmin, Im not really interested in adding another chart plotter for a few numbers. Gtown Hole, Ledge, SW banks, Edisto and deep sword. Any one willing to go through them and pull the numbers?

I also clarified my opinion, but I don't expect you to try to grasp the full discussion when you can zero in on one line and base your entire position on it.
But, even with that South Florida’s lack of secrecy is not “guys giving out spots” as you keep trying to bring the discussion to. If you want a “spot” in the keys, you can just sit on the back porch and watch where other people fish. Or, you can venture out in a boat for 10 minutes and look for dark patches of rock in the crystal clear water. Nothing is secret down there. In the keys, the water is probably accessible 250+ days a year.
While we lack that here, if you don’t believe that making everything public will change the fishery, then you just can’t be convinced of anything at all.
I never saw a clarification or retraction that you stated secrecy was not the problem. I know you can’t give an inch, seldom have. So what is your clarification? Fishing Pressure is the issue? In South Florida, yes it is. In S.C. fishing pressure would be reduced on many frequented spots if people would venture to find other areas to fish. We’ve got a long way to go before fishing pressure here does what it did to south florida. Thank goodness.
I think it would be great if you could make your own numbers like the Florida panhandle and Alabama. It looks like most of the artificial reef deployments are around $2,000 to $2,500. Not bad to have your own personal secret spot.
That NOS and NMFS data covers a lot of those “private numbers” off the Panhandle and AL.
New ones would be secret only until a new survey showed them.
But with a sidescan fishfinder under a $1K and so many boats with radar there is little chance of a secret spot staying secret too long.
S.FL has a lot going against it.Population,accessibility,poaching,red tide,sewage outfall,sugar runoff.
Understood. Side scan is another game changer shining light on hidden things. The good news is that currently, it's cost prohibitive (for now) and you at least have to be fairly close. Stuff is pretty spread out here, but its obvious that technology is slowly closing the gap.
You failed to mention the fertile reefs bleaching out do to global warming. Thats a major impact aswell.
Fred we are not far behind. It happens a lot faster than most would imagine. Add in increased number of anglers, word of mouth, social media and easy access to good sources of information and electronics and we are in a express lane to crash a fishery. Like 30yrs ago we had Warsaws commonly caught on head boats to giant sizes. I havent ever seen a warsaw caught or heard of any in my life. At least we have a lot of mpas that should help for future reproduction.

Warsaws are caught here all the time. They are in deeper water. Most people don't fish Warsaw water because it requires special gear, is far offshore, and the skimpy limits on snowies make it not worth the effort. I say snowies because you can't keep Warsaw, but they are commonly caught when targeting snowies.
Meanwhile another commercial boat is busted in Little River with over 1500 lbs of illegal fish. This is just one that got caught. Point being, I’m not worried about any Rec guys doing damage just yet.

There ya go. What any recreational fisher could hold of illegal fish in an iced down fish box is not a drop in the bucket for those that fish commercially Illegal.
What it would take for Recreational fishermen to do damage even with “SECRET” numbers would not be a drop in the bucket for what the Commercial folk have been doing for decades.
. just like people might have never paid Sellsfish $500 for some numbers in the past, until he takes their boat to a few of them and shows them the groceries.

Wait…he will do that:smiley:
SAFMC you suck!
You can have all the numbers in the world… But if you don’t have the knowledge on how to present to the fish, you will never be good at bottom fishing. I have been teaching people for years how to catch grouper.
