Last week at ICAST I was speaking with David DiBenedetto from SWS, and this came up. SWS has an article about it in the August issue. It doesn’t pertain to billfish necessarily but it turns out that Florida Fish & Wildlife has imposed new laws regarding large species that people take out of the water for photos. Now, if you don’t have a kill permit for the species, they will nail you. No more 200lb Tarpon pics in Florida. I think this may just be the start.

How much does the kill permit cost? How many gov't jobs did this create? Is it ok to kill fish if you have a permit? Soon you will be paying a user tax on toilet paper.

DNR REALLY wanted to crack down on this, there is written evidence right here that you KNEW what the law was and you willingly decided to break it. I'm sure that the judge will understand that you wanted good pictures...
If you "REALLY" did not want DNR to crack down on this you would take your pic of your first sail fish and take his but back to the dock! Or at least tell everyone that you did. If you want to take the pic I would rather you release the fish after the fact than keep him. But then again no one asked me.
We are all fisherman here, we are known for lying. Not sure how well this site would stand up in court.
Someone needs to post the lawyers info from the deer molestation case. I bet he could clear your name!
BTW, check your email!

All Rise - 31 Contender Fish Around with a pair of 250 Yamahas
Kill permits have been around in Florida for a long time. The point is most anglers don’t go out to intentionally kill large tarpon, or billfish for that matter. But there is enough evidence that hauling these things out of the water for a snapshot is deadly to the fish, so they made a law - No pulling the fish out of the water without a kill permit, same as the NMFS. I think its more about awareness.
It took like 2 weeks to get a response from them when I called. I was really wanting to know because Greg was giving it to me pretty hard over the sail pics I posted. I ended up just staying on hold till I got through. I was amazed I got a fax from Mr. Fairclough. Again, good people over there at NMFS, if you can get in touch with them.

I was under the impression from your first post that these were new regs.Sorry,I got a little chapped.Should have expected nothing less from the hanging chad state.
I am glad to see this post got back to the subject matter at hand. For a minute it took a turn in a bad direction. Having sex with dead animals is a stange twist for taking a sailfish out of the water. Again, I thank you for provding hours of entertainment.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day. FISH 24/7------------ 25 Grady w/ a couple of Gas Guzzling 175 Johnsons “O-SEA-D” the old “Havanadaydream”
Rumor has it that this thread has spawned a website and the bureaucrats are using it against all of us as I type this message… Quick!!! Run for cover… destroy your computers and incriminating IP addresses, Big Brother is watching and coming for you NOW… Am I paranoid? Are you?!? What day is it?!? Was that the front door or the back door?!?

Then they would just need to check the HMS records to verify that you actually did call in the kill and everything would be okay assuming you could sleep at night. Furthermore, all of the rest of the fishing community would still love you for killing all of those sailfish and would be more than willing to help you find fish in the future.
Seriously… you holy than thou, liberal, wacko environmentalists actually call yourselves fishermen?!?

I’m still wondering how a “Holy than thou” type of person can be classified as a liberal. I thought all Holier than thou types were on the right side of the spectrum.
My favorites are the guys that make no sense at all and then think that they’ve pissed in everyone’s corn flakes when nobody even bothers to respond to their 2nd grade drivel.
